Ultramarines veterans WIP

Hi,

Since the release of the new SM codex I've been working on some Ultramarines 1st company veterans to join my 3rd company on the battlefield. I'm nearly done with these - they need some touching up, fine details, and those with big open shoulderpads need some transfers up on there, and the bases definitely need some work. I'm also going to drill out the gun barrels at some point, but historically I never used to do this. Also my camera's also not fantastic, the shots are a little blurry. Also, I'm only an average painter, and I'm really only going for "classy table standard" here. I'm not selling this well...

Anyhew... I'm really interested in C&C but where they're still kinda WIP I didn't want to put them in the showcase

I've gone from lurking to posting quite a lot in the last week or so and didn't want to look like I'm all talk, so, here we go:

Spoiler:

Sternguard veterans:

I've actually got 10 of these built, but I'm not the fastest painter in the world, and I wanted to get 5 to table quality to use in a game soon.
Sergeant:

A regular bolter guy:

Assault terminators, including a definitely not finished captain in the background:

I was going for a marble effect on the storm shields. Thoughts?

Re:Ultramarines veterans WIP

Well, for someone who calls themselves 'average', I think they are rather excellent!

If I was to really nitpick, IMHO, I would pick out just a couple of points:

A) The white looks just a little too thick on some of the helmets, most notably the beakie, but it's not too much to write home about - just a touch on the thick side.
B)The blue, whilst it's all down to your own personal taste, looks a little more crimson fist blue to me - possibly a highlight with a more vivid blue would bring a sense of depth to the overall effect.

Aside from those two points, I couldn't fault the rest - they look crisp, clean and dynamic

Regarding the marble, obviously your going for a white marble effect, but at the moment it looks a little too much like white with poor coverage, and not enough like marble with veins running through it. There is a good marble tutorial here on chest of colours:

http://chestofcolors.com/how-to-paint-marble-bases/

I've never tried it myself as it didn't suit my Salamanders Terminators and it looks quite complex - I think you may find it hard to apply to a small area such as a storm shield. However, a substitute may to add a web of thin lines of orange/brown/tan lines to your shields with a wash of Agrax Earthshade pooled in areas to simulate larger veins. I'm not sure how well that would turn out, but it may be enough to get your creativity flowing

Looking great - keep it up

Thank you! I agree with all of that. I haven't done much white before, so I did lay it on pretty thick - paranoid about it looking patchy. The darker blue is a positive choice, I prefer it to the baby-blue look, it's a bit more grimdark.

That marble tutorial is enlightening - as you say, the shields are quite small areas to paint, but just the point about throwing some brown seams in there has made me think. I will definitely be giving it a go.

Cheers!
