I have a bunch of clay working tools from when I took a ceramics class at college. They do wonders on pumpkins, gets the guts out. Particularly a pair of thin, metal ovals with one side straight, one smooth, one serrated. Google "clay scraper" to get some pictures.

It used to be like when it started to get dark so like 6pm or so. Round here (in the uk), its dark enough to start around 5.15ish so I agree with your timing.
Its about now my mum dusts her official speech off (bear in mind she hates halloween)

Imagine this bellowed at everyone who came to your door (and on one memorable occasion someone actually opened and came through the front door and wandered into the living to ask her trick or treat)

When I was at home, I never got to trick or treat - I was too busy making sure I was nowhere near the front of the house cos I found me mums shouting more embarrasing than...well most things
