Nervous about painting center pieces

What this is about is basically I finished cleaning/making my Angron model (finally, it's been on my desk for weeks now) and now it's ready to be painted, I've suddenly become ultra nervous about it! My painting is to an acceptable table top standard and I've never been nervous before, but a part of me is just worried about the painting and how it's going to come out as it's going to be my center piece to my entire army.

Does anybody else feel like this sometimes? like the model is just so daunting you do not know where to start hopefully yes so I'm not the only one scared of a little bit of plastic

I know the feeling, it's like playing a sport to me, I'm nervous until the first dab of paint hits the model. After that it's all good. The nice thing about painting is you can always cover your mistakes.

Being nervous means that you care about the quality of your work - be proud of that. I'm in the same boat, I haven't touched my Abaddon and Loken. Don't want to spoil a great piece with my shoddy skills. "I'll just do some more other things to get better first"...

Just saying that I feel your pain ; p

Firstly, take an old, broken or otherwise surplus painted mini and use one of the common techniques to strip it. (Dettol or preferably Fairy Power Spray)

Once you've done that successfully you'll know that anything you do isn't permanent, and the worst that can happen is he spends a night bathing in chemicals and you start again. You'll also (assuming you haven't before) not be feeling like you're risking your prized mini doing something you've never done if you have to.

Secondly, spend a goodly amount of time looking at the model and visualising what you're going to do with the colours, not just overall scheme, but the small details, my paint jobs frequently grind to a halt over what colour to paint a belt or holster or some other small detail, I then get paralysed with indecision. Spending time planning before hand can really help mitigate that and give you more confidence as you paint.

Finally, relax! Nobody ever got better at anything by sticking to just what they found easy or were good at, you will be a better painter after you've finished than you are now, even if only slightly.

I'm the same way with my centerpieces. I have a forge world bloodthirster I'm the mall right now and have been obsessively looking at videos and images of nicely painted one's. I also like to look at the model itself and visualize it as best as I can

I am working and almost finished with my center piece model. Its a $145 Galleon. Yer darn right I was nervous (and still am) when painting it. The issue is that you can't let it stop you. If all else fails you can always strip the model and start over.

I'm like that anytime I'm faced with detail on something I really want to look good. I painted the Psyker in my Gallery 3 times! As Azreal said, it's not permanent it can be changed, and as you paint it you'll learn what you like on it and how to do it, so in the end it will look exactly the way you want!

thanks a bunch for all the responses! Safe to say I'm feeling a bit better now about being scared of Angron paint job wise.

can't seem to find a detailed tutorial on how other people painted him which would be of a massive benefit to but oh well!

The problem with tutorials is, if you follow them, you end up with someone else's paint job.

There's enough detail and reference on Angron now, you can absorb what's out there and bring your own take on it while remaining true to the spirit of the fluff.

I used to get like that and put off painting my characters/HQ models forever. I ended up with a fully painted army minus the HQ units which where just primed.

At some point I just stopped caring and my painting improved as a result. If in doubt, strip and repaint. Your best paint job that you laboured over for seemingly forever looks like junk and you have no feelings against stripping it 5-10 years later.
