My idea was to use a polystyrene base with a coating of pva glue and gravel for protection but leaving the deamon corner bare so that when I spray it the spray melts the base but I'm unsure if it will melt it enough and then set hard when dry ? For bigger holes/craters and more predictable/controllable results use polystyrene cement ie plastic glue.
Also fire, hot implements or a heatgun will work a treat.
just have a play with nearly anything solvent based and see what effects you can achieve.
