There's the bare armed jungle fighters (catachans), the shoulder armor +helmet Starship Troopers looking guys (Cadians), guys with big coats, guys with gas masks.... They all have different "generic" color schemes. One thing to keep in mind always is that these are your models, so whatever you WANT to paint them like is fine. If you want to stick with the color scheme GW did, then we need to know which variant of IG you're working with.

In terms of paint, there's lots of other miniature quality paints available. I had some Cadian Infantry with a red cammo pattern uniform, the carapace armor was a dark red. They looked good. Perhaps a world they campaigned on had red colored deserts.
