I even made it into university for astronomy, but it turns out that although I'm otherwise quite an intelligent guy, I was too thick for the math that's needed for that.

It's not too bad, I spent a week riding them, I do not recommend doing it in shorts though, I was mega chafed by the end of the week, but it was a fun time.

And sauceman, check out horse stables near you, you might be able to find an owner that is willing to 'lease' their horse to you. It generally costs about 10% of the horses cost per year, so a 30,000 dollar horse costs 3,000 a year, or about 300 a month. You basically pay for the feed/housing of the horse, and generally in return you get the ability to ride the horse whenever you want (within reason) and get free riding lessons once a week. My old housemate did this for about a year, and then he got a DUI and had to stop because he wasn't allowed to drive anywhere that wasn't home or work (he then got a job at a bar >_<.

Cheesecat, it's not too bad on the junk, some gaits are smoother than others, and you learn quickly to go with the motion of that ocean as it is less painful on the sack.

When I was 15, my uncle was killed while undercover making a drug buy. The subsequent disintegration of his family in the aftermath of that made me realize well, maybe it's not for me after all.

I then decided IT seemed like a great gig. That was also a huge mistake as it turned out, but I have remained in nonetheless.

I still don't really know what I want to be when I grow up.

Sadly I saw that it was something that was best put on the side for something more "stable" so I went for my other interest of psychology. It ended up being far more scientific than I though it would be (the social aspect being more interesting than the biological parts of neurotransmitters and what not) and I ended dropping it because of the mandatory stats course. To be fair, there is currently 1 comic artist that I know of that still does the basic work of her comic in pencil on board. Danielle Corsetto draws her comics and scans it and sends it off to a colorist she has, though she was doing it herself for awhile.

In high school, I wanted to be an architect or urban planner, but even then I wasn't sold. When I was applying for university, I found out the Canadian Forces will pay for your degree in exchange for service. So I walked in to the recruiting center, filled out my paperwork, but I had to pick three trades they could put me in. I had no clue what trades even existed, so the recruiter told me to look at the posters on the wall. Pointed at the pilot poster, wrote it down, and here I am less than six months from getting my wings.

I guess I wanted to be a pilot. But not fighters, gross. Helos baby.

When we (my year at Primary School) started going to the local tennis club for, well, tennis, I got hooked and wanted to become a tennis player; I started going to the camps they ran during the years, and actually got pretty good. Then I developed Osgood Schlatter's disease and had to pack it all in. It's one thing to dream and only ever dream, but another entirely to start living it only for it to be taken away.

After that, I wanted to be a lawyer. I studied law and politics at college (amongst other things) for the first 3 months, until I had a mental breakdown (long story, don't ask) and had to drop out. /sigh

Then I wanted to become a software developer (I say 'wanted', I mean 'it was the only thing I really had left that I was the least bit interested in'). I took a work-based IT apprenticeship that'd end with me £4000 richer and with a solid job in the IT industry, as well as the best part of a year's experience from the apprenticeship alone and a goodly number of industry-specific, recognised, and respected qualifications. I was the only one on the course in the entire country (AFAIK) that they couldn't find a placement for. I was also the only person that year who obtained at least one of the optional Microsoft certifications, and I got distinctions across the board in the various assignments, save one which I had to miss the first day of due to illness (but even then I still managed a solid credit).

I missed out on a job, ~£3000 of the £4000, had to complete the apprenticeship for free at my dad's workplace (last resort; there was nowhere else), got a load of qualifications I lacked the experience to use, and to top it all off, completing the apprenticeship rendered me unable to take part in any more government-funded apprenticeships. You'll never guess what the government is hailing as the solution to youth unemployment. ¬.¬

But I digress (the entire situation just really irritates me to this day), the only other thing that's really stayed constant has been my passion for writing, although you really need to have a job to support yourself as you write.

Nearly 21 years, 3 failed attempts at achieving what I wanted, 9 years of depression and a lot of anxiety issues later, and I've got nothing. What do I want to be when I grow up? Turns out being a superhero is also a pretty tough racket to crack, so I turned my attention to paleontology. Because dinosaurs are the gak. And then comic artist.This was all by around the age of 10-11.


By time I hit middle/highschool, I had an inclination and a push from the parents for engineering. Preferably robotic engineering. Because there's money in that. And robots are cool, what with the destruction and enslavement of humanity and what-not.

But after doing some intro engineering/mechanical design stuff, I realized I absolutely hated it and would likely hung myself before 40 going down that road, and went back towards visual design.

And now I want to be an illustrator again. Working on that one. I wanted to be a fighter pilot, but that was before I rode on a plane, had glasses, and realized I disliked heights... I was fething white knuckled as a 12yr old on my first flight, chewing gum like a madman to help alleviate my ears popping (stupid myths). Now? Fething flying is simple. Gotta love loopholes in gravity!

Yes, I'm well aware that PRK and LASIK are now acceptable if you want to an aviator, but my decision (and probably many others like) not to pursue that path is a little more complicated than "I had horrible eyesight." Corrective surgery wasn't common place or cheap when I was a kid and by the time it was (and deemed acceptable for aviators) I had already taken a different path in life and was in no place to give up everything I had already worked for to (hopefully) become a fighter pilot. My childhood best friend (we both dreamed of being Naval Aviators when we grew up so we could fly F-14s together) actually did go on to be a Naval Aviator, after going to Virginia Tech and receiving an engineering degree. Next year I'm going to try to get the AF to do it for me, I'm sick of my glasses. I was approved for it before, but had other issues come up, so now I gotta go through the process again.

Pretty sure Lasik's still unapproved. Was when I went through. Nobody really knows how that little flap will hold up under G loading.

LASIK is approved by the USAF with no restrictions to aircraft flown as off 2007 (it was approved in 2004 but there were limits to the type of aircraft that could be flown) and expanded the program for more airmen to qualify in 2011. LASIK is under study for the Navy/Marines and a waiver is required for pilots and student aviators after PRK surgery.

I wanted to be a paleontologist, with my own museum of only Dinosaur skeletons I had found. I was going to start by working for the local council (borough for you US chaps) to learn to use excavation equipment, so I could build the museum myself. Then to populate the museum with skeletons! I had started to collect lamb chop bones to build the skeletons. A paleontologist as most people have noted, cause dinosaurs.

Then an engineer cause fuckin Legos man. Legos were my jam.

Then a marine biologist because I loved sea life of all kinds and SCUBA diving (and still love both)

I thought about being a vet because I wanted to be a doctor again but I was in my angsty "I hate people phase". I took agriculture education and my awful teacher spoiled it for me. Also everyone was a hick. Go figure

Then I wanted to make video games, specifically for Blizzard since I played a ton of WoW, Starcraft and Diablo. I tried it and hated it

Then I considered being a orchestral musician. I was quite good actually. Lots of talent, I was just so caught up in everything else in high school that I didnt practice enough and my career never really took off... I still play for fun whenever I can

Then I discovered the science of making people not die, or biotechnology as I called it. I went to college for one year for it, changed my mind since it seemed under control with everyone else in the field making perfectly measured strides towards immortality without me. So I decided that I would go back to plan A and become a doctor, grades fell through and I dropped out.

Scrambling for a career, I decided on something easily attainable and something I loved doing, so I went to basic EMT school. I did great and loved every second of it

Being an Eagle Scout, I worked for my local council while I looked for a real job and fleetingly considered being a Park Ranger, but now I have a job in a local hospital ER as a technician which is really what I want to do and I plan to go back to school for 2-3 years to get my RN and work in the same ER and live a comfy but humble life.

The problem being I saw how much work my mum put into being a teacher - I have no wish to have homework. I didn't do it at school, I'm not starting now.
4 hrs of marking to take home a night on some occasions - screw that...
I spent as long as possible in education - I left uni at 27
Now I'm living the dream - I work in an office next to a heater.

Really, I've pretty much wanted to be a fighter pilot most of my life, even when I wanted to be something else (and when I say fighter pilot, I mean Air Force F-15E or A-10 pilot, none of that Navy bs (sorry, not sorry Seaward )), was even going for it but I had to drop ROTC because my academics were suffering too much. I got certified in 2009 after College, passed the physical and academy with flying colors. Then I got a scholarship to a University and now I'm attending that. From about 12-17 I wanted a profession in programming/IT - I took a few computer science/design classes in highschool and did quite well.
