Multiwound champions in challenges

Another stupid question from me, but...

Suppose a unit of Bull Centaurs (3 wounds apiece) charges into a unit of Orcs with a combat lord in it. The unit of centaurs has 1 wound on them. If I understand correctly, you take away 1 model every time you take 3 total wounds, so if the unit took 2 more wounds, a rank and file centaur would be taken out.

Now let's suppose the general challenges and the champion accepts. If the general deals 2 wounds, does the champion die? How are those wounds allocated? Is the champion treated as a separate model instead of being simply 'removed last'? Pretty sure that's RAI and RAW, just can't quite find the wording to make that concrete.

Champions can be targeted seperately from the unit, so own wounds that were directly dealt to them. They can receive wounds which were dealt to the unit, but only if there are no RnF remaining.
So in your challenge, the champion takes 2 wounds but does not die, the unit still has 1.

If you look at the thread on Other Trickster's Shard, the refernces are near the bottom of the firat page.

Multiwound champions in challenges

If I remember correctly as well, in a challenge, wounds never carry over. That's part of why you are allowed overkill.
Even if there was a challenge vs a single wound model and 4 wounds were caused there would be no damage carried over to the unit..
So the answer remains the same that the centaur champion only takes 2 wounds and no model is removed.

Champions own their own wounds, unlike other members of the unit.

Wounds can overflow from the unit, but not the other way around. And never if the model is engaged in a challenge.

Because of this it can also be a viable tactic to engineer a combat such that only the champion is engaged and any woulds done will only kill him and not the unit. It's a great way to hold up an opposing unit if you have stubborn/steadfast or something.

Ogres do it all the time. Especially when we likely also have a character in the unit.

So 25% of your attacks can only go against my Slaughtermaster, 25% can only go against my Champion, and only 50% can actually hit my RnF.

My opponents be raging
