Newb question from a non-newb: how do you always get the best save when using a unit w/ mixed saves?

Can't believe this has never come up for me before, but I know that there's supposed to a way to always get the best save possible if you've got a unit with mixed types of saves... but I've never bothered trying to confirm just exactly how you go about doing so.

As a Necron player, the most common example I see is for the old Destroyer-Lord-leading-Wraiths scenario.
The Destroyer Lord typically has a 2+ save, and the Wraiths a 3++ inv.
Typically the D-Lord is supposed to tank the AP 3+ shots, and the Wraiths take anything AP1 or 2.
My question is... how exactly is this supposed to be done?
Is it just a case of positioning, followed up by Look Out Sir?
(eg. have the model with the best armor save closest to the enemy, so hits will automatically be allocated to him first, and if the shot is low AP, have one of the 3++ models jump in the way?)

If this is the case (the only way I could think of), does it only work for shooting, or can it be used in close combat as well?

Newb question from a non-newb: how do you always get the best save when using a unit w/ mixed saves?

Yes, it's all about positioning and works best during shooting phase. As mentioned for your example: you want the D-Lord to be placed nearest to the enemy's firepower. There are different types of scenarios:

lascannon: either let him eat it and lose a wound or LOS it and let a Wraith give its 3++ a try but risk losing a whole model if it fails.
krak missiles: D-Lord takes his 2+
multiple plasma shots: LOS
small arms fire: D-Lord takes his 2+ until he gets low on wounds

In an assault you won't have as much freedom due to challenges and model placement.

As a shooter, you can often move your models to make the closest model a wraith and not the Dlord and then all the saves fall on the wraiths until they die are the Dlord is the closest.

Would you then not issue challenges with your dlord since he could tanks wounds for the wraiths?
