Colony is the only album I have of theirs on CD. It's unlikely that will change anytime soon.

That would be incorrect. Viking metal is an actual genre, not a descriptor. It has certain elements that are totally absent on Amon Amarth's music.

I think the In Flames discussion has been derailed long enough.

Kalmah (my favorite metal band) and In Flames were pretty a pretty big inspiration to the band I played in after I got out of high school (back when metalcore and screamo where still all the rage).

Funny, my progression was punk, hardcore, metalcore, and metal (though I never stopped listening to punk or hardcore). By the time I left high school I still listened to a lot of metal, but I started to listen to a wider assortment of musical style (that is when I fell in love with bands like Dinosaur Jr., Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, and Murder By Death).

I do believe in the big 3 classifications though but even those have become murky with "metalcore" and "punk hardcore" and whatnot. I typically classify suff now as things I like, don't like, and maybe will grow on me.

I've found a lot of stuff I didn't like initially grew on me to the point of being some of my favorites. Like hope conspiracy's "end note" or modern life is war's witness or some of the newer converge albums. Now those are hardcore albums not metal but you get my point.

I sort of think you do. Because before I was into metal, I always heard my cousin listening to In Flames and thought it was mindless screaming. Then I started off with softer metal like Maiden and worked my way up to stuff like Flames. Now I see it is glorious.
