I recommend Isopropyl alcohol and a soft toothbrush for plastics and metal(not finecast).

Most of the models painted have paint over the primer, so just primer in theory will come up better.

Any of the thousand or so posts on stripping should give more than enough info.

I do understand the issue however, as I sometimes use the gray primers on projects,and an buddy of mine used it for an guard project he was working on....it was hard for him to see where the primer was!!!!
