when i first apply it to a model it looks good but then as it dries and the oil crashes in strange patterns it looks worse and worse.

One I keep reading about online but haven't found locally is "white spirits". I have read that it is an odourless mineral spirit but Google tells me it's just another name for regular mineral spirits.

Also what brand of oil paint are you using? The most common one I find in tutorials is Windsor and Newton series 1 oil paints and that's what I use. You are over mixing your washes, too much MS and not enough paint. Additionally there is a product called Liquin, get the fine detail kind, mixing a VERY small amount in will also help, it is kind of like a mixing medium. Also, try doing your washes over a flat surface as opposed to a gloss one. Any lacquer based or water based semi-gloss to flat sealer will be fine with mineral spirits.
