Paperhammer 40k

I have been checking out some really awesome stuff from waaay back in the day. Apparently GW used to be a small fish in a big pond and they had some pretty grandiose visions, giant war-walkers decimating entire armies, huge tanks slugging it out with shells the size of other smaller tanks, weird and terrible arcanum striking down soldiers like they were made out of... wait a minute? Paper? They really were made out of paper?

AWESOME!!!!

Yeah, for those of you who didn't know, GW actually used to sell plans for models like the Baneblade in White Dwarf! The reasoning was that since GW couldn't afford to cast the models themselves they would encourage people to build their own models out of whatever was at hand. This became known as Paperhammer and for a long time it was the bread and butter of mini wargaming and many many hobbyists came forth with some really stunning stuff, often made with nothing more than some cardstock and popsicle sticks! As time went by and more and more people got into GW games Paperhammer sort of fell by the wayside and then eventually was banned from anything more than casual play.

Now we pay upwards of $60 for a vehicle. Back when I was just a mite you could make your own Titan for less than that, but that's not why I'm here. I want to see your Paperhammers!

Come on, break out the ol' scratch builds and lets see some pics!

Eh, these days "paperhammer" models such as you describe tend to be plasticard/cardboard/duct tape/GW-Bitz mashups. But, still, this could get interesting

Paperhammer 40k

Although GW used to be much more friendly to modelers and encourage scratchbuilding of all sorts, I can only recall two models that they offered in WD that would qualify as "paperhammer". One was a Baneblade, the other was an ork vehicle of some sort.

They did feature pictures of scratchbuilt vehicles with some frequency (the infamous deorderant hover tank) and some modifications (Falcon into Wave Serpant).

For some of the better modern "paperhammer" look for Eli Patoroch. Not only does he have almost all the Imperial vehicles and most the Orks (barring titans) he has done a number of converted vehicles which look pretty sharp too.
