The necrons rules the galaxy at one time. Did they rule other races, did other raaces exist?

The Sautekh Dynasty includes 'four score Tomb Worlds and five times as many alien worlds paying tribute to the dynasty'

So one small part of the Necron Empire includes 400 worlds (human ones too) that aren't necron.



Also, of course they have an economy and things to do. There are ships to be built and tribute to be counted.

One day, one of their Kings looked around and said, "This gak ain't gonna last. We're gonna kill each other off." So he looked for a solution. He found it in a race that had mastered the secrets of the Warp and of Immortality, which they would not share with the Necrontyr. So the Necrontyr went to war with the Old Ones.

... and got wtfspanked.

So the Necrontyr withdraw to lick their wounds, preaching their hatred for the Old Ones. Then, some Necrontyr scientists find that there is this giant thing eating their local star. Somehow, they communicate with it, and convince it to come down to them to inhabit a body made of living metal. So it does. As do many, many others of its kind. These things the Necrontyr call the C'Tan. They are god-like beings with wondrous powers, and the Necrontyr worship them as gods.

Later, they would regret this action.

One of the C'Tan, called The Deceiver, tells the Silent King, "We fought the Old Ones, too, and lost. Let's join forces!" And so they do. The War in Heaven begins.... and also goes badly for the Necrontyr/C'Tan at first. Then the Necrontyr decide to put their entire population into bodies of living metal. All their merchants, poets, artisans, teachers, laborers, grunt soldiers, children... basically, anyone who was not a member of a Noble Court, or one of the super-science researchers, gets turned into a Necron Warrior. The relatively miniscule remainder get turned into some other variant of Necron, which may or may not have personality or even individual thought.

So, in order to go to war with the Old Ones, the Necrontyr destroyed their entire civilization.

And then they won, wiping out the Old Ones. Then they turned on their gods, and "killed" them too. Both of these wars cost trillions of lives. A war of its like would never again be seen in the galaxy. And, now, the children of the Old Ones were starting to recover, to rearm, to gang up to crush the depleted Necron forces.

So they hid. They went to sleep. The Silent King destroyed his Command Protocols and boarded his ship, heading out beyond the galactic rim. As time passed, the Krork and the Eldar lost track of the Necron Tombs, and were distracted by other galactic events. Other races came and went, stars lived and died, the galaxy turned.

Sixty million years passed. It was now M41. The Silent King had encountered the advancing Tyranid Hive Fleets somewhere beyond the edge of the galaxy, turned around, and flown back to the Milky Way to wake up his legions and prepare for war. Only, he can't find them all. Worlds are lost. Worlds have moved. Worlds have changed. There are new races in places of dominance and control.
