Crackle paint for lava bases question

So I saw a few pics online today that someone took to display how he did easy lava bases with crackle paint and I'm looking for some insight. While the pictures didn't have a tutorial I'm pretty sure how he did it. I like the look of the bases and would like to do them on my CSMs, but I already did a few of the bases with Stirland Mud texture paint. I know I could just continue with the new lava base method, but I like uniformity lol. So here is my question, for the bases that already have the texture paint on them, could I just paint red, orange, and yellow over top of the texture paint, then do the crackle paint (mixed with black) and still get the lava effect without it looking like gak? As I understand it, the crackle paint "crackles" more dramatically when there is something textured underneath.

Crackle paint for lava bases question

Currently for my Necron basing I put down vallejo sandy paste and then I place my crackle paint on top. It seems to stick well and still cracks just fine. So... yes, I think that would work, I don't know how well mixing the crackle paint with black paint would work. I hope that is somewhat helpful.

Thanks for the response! I'm probably going to have to thin down the black a bit. I'm going to test it on a base this weekend and see what happens regardless.

Crackle paint for lava bases question

The crackle paint from GW doesn't really like to mix with other paints. I've done some samples with it and haven't gotten any good results by mixing them. If you can find a way to get them to mix with the same crackle results, let me know!

Re:Crackle paint for lava bases question

depending on how large the base is, crackle paste from Golden, works for me the best.

I apply a thin layer of pva glue then follow with the crackle paste, then once dry I will use red/orange ink in the gaps, and finally just airbrush black at an angle so it doesn't fill in the cracks.

I figured if I used the gw stuff it would have to be watered down pretty good. I also have bottle of crackle paint I got at a hobby store a while back that I could try instead of the gw stuff.
