1850 SW IG

So I'm looking at going to a local tournament the beginning of next month and thought I'd try something new instead of running the usual 'cron wraith+anni-barge+flyer list. I have some space wolves and some pods sitting around my man cave and thought maybe I'd try and put together a mini-drop pod list. Since I'm not playing Tua, Eldar or Daemons I have no illusions of winning anyway :( Thet being said I need to pick up two more units of grey hunters and three more pods which is about all I can swing in a month (and that's pushing it). This will be pretty much all of the space wolves I own with some IG sprinkled in to try and deal with flyers. I've never played wolves as primary before so any suggestions would be appreciated.

Two of the pods (wolf guard & Long Fangs) come down empty from reserve along with one of the GH. One wolf guard and the RP in terminator armor attaches to each GH unit. Can they pod in even if they're in terminator armor? Hope so. The RP in runic armor blobs up with the infantry squads and mans the Icarus. The PCS is a valk rider hopping out on an objective on turn 5 flaming dudes as needed. Valk, Icarus and Hydra provide flyer suppression.

Feel free to pick away!

HQ: Rune Priest in Power Armour, Chooser of the Slain, Runic Armour (warlord)
HQ: Rune Priest in Terminator Armour, Melta Bombs

Troops: 9x Grey Hunters Pack, Meltagun 5, Drop Pod
Troops: 9x Grey Hunters Pack, Meltagun 5, Drop Pod
Troops: 9x Grey Hunters Pack, Meltagun 5, Drop Pod
Troops: 9x Grey Hunters Pack, Meltagun 5, Drop Pod

Elite: 3x Wolf Guard Pack in Terminator Armour, Melta Bombs, Combi-Meltagun, Drop Pod

Heavy Support: Long Fangs Pack
4x Long Fangs Pack, Missile Launcher
1x Squad Leader
1x Drop Pod

HQ: Company Command Squad

Troops: Infantry Platoon
PCS, 2xFlamer, Heavy Flamer
Infantry Squad, Autocannon
Infantry Squad, Autocannon
Infantry Squad, Autocannon

Heavy Support: Hydra

Fast Attack: Vendetta

Aegis Defence Lines, Icarus Lascannon

Re:1850 SW IG

A model in Terminator Armor can Drop Pod in, but he takes up two slots in a DP, so you'll have to remove one Grey Hunter from each DP. You're using Wolf Standards, right? You don't need the DP dedicated to the Wolf Guard unit. One of the filled DPs will be coming in from reserve, no matter what, and you Deep Strike half your Drop Pods ~rounded up~ the first round. Meaning either way, three DPs of GHs come in round one. You aren't likely to need a second empty DP, and you can use the points to add another Long Fang, or something. Personally, I like to divide my long-range LFs between Lascannons and Missile Launchers. Since they have Fire Control, you can team them up on separate targets or dump the lot on one.

Otherwise it's a reasonable list. Why so melta-heavy, though?

Wow, thanks! That's all very useful advice. The melta is in case I run into dudes in tin cans. There's usually at least a couple running several rhinos or the occasional LR. I'd hate to be running around in someones backfield and not have a reliable way to force them out.

1850 SW IG

If you're running multiple GH units, it seems good strategy to specialize. One DP could have a GH with a Flamer and a WG with a combi-flamer. DP 2 could have a GH with a Meltagun and WG with Combi-Melta. DP 3 could have a GH with a Plasma Gun and a WG with Combi-Plasma. Target the Pods accordingly, and the points (higher for plasma, lower for flamer) should balance out reasonably well compared to the mid-cost meltas you've got.

I'm not sold on WGPL; I like the idea of GH packs with 2 of each weapon, but YMMV. Shooty armies like Tau and Eldar pick off my SWs pretty quickly - I run SW exclusively and WGT don't seem to make the difference for my ground forces, but your IG may be swinging things in your favor against the shooty and mech-heavy enemies.

Re:1850 SW IG

Yeah, I was wondering about the WG myself but on paper having that 2+ to absorb a couple of wounds before the rest of the squad starts taking it to the chin seemed like a good idea. But losing that second free weapon is very very painful hence the combi's. Hopefully I'll be able to play test it a bit before 1/11/14.

Point-for-point, it's hard to say if one's better than the other, but the 2+ (and the invulnerable save) certainly can make a difference.
