Deciding what paints I need

I'm getting back into the hobby after 8 years, and one of the things that seems to have changed the most about the hobby (other than the prices...) is the Citadel Paints range. I have lizardmen, Tyranids, and Dark Elves to paint, but want to focus on the Dark elves first.

I have a rough paint scheme in mind - I know I'll need paints for bone, flesh, etc, and I want to have Green as my main colour (current thinking is green on black for the armour), or a green version of the lovely red Clar Karond army in the new book. But I'm finding it very hard to work out what paints I'll need, and I get the feeling I won't be able to work it out without painting things and experimenting. But unfortunately I don't know many others nearby I could borrow paints from, or have the money to buy everything that looks nice and see what works.

Does anyone have any pointers? I've read through the painting citadel miniatures guide to try and work it out myself, and I've got a paint range pamphlet that I've ticked 20+ paints on as potentials... but I really need to narrow it down!

Thanks

Well, there is this:

http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/paintChart.jsp?catId=cat820002a&rootCatGameStyle=paints-tools

it lists all the paints, specific for the army and the "basic" color scheme.
What you need of those ranges however depends... The base, the shades, the layers and the glaze are rather useful imo, the dry-range not as much since I tend not to drybrush much.

Basically pick a tone and get the appropriate colors according to the table. There's a row for nearly everything (and some neat new stuff, like the new technicals).

I don't know what DE use for colors speficially, but I'd say.. The DE line? Metallics for the weapons (Leadbelcher/Nuln Oil/Ironbreaker/Runefang)
Skin like tones (Ratskin line)? This maybe settles the basics you'd require.

Pick a nice mid tone colour for each. So a nice green, red
, blue ect and just add black and white to the. To make darker or. Righter. Just remember ratios if using dropper bottles.

This does not apply to everything but in general it does.

Re:Deciding what paints I need

I prefer Vallejo paints because of the handy dropper bottle.

To start I would pick up some basic colors. Black, white, red, green, and blue. Go for more pure colors so because if you go with dropper bottles you can mix your paints to achieve just about any color. It is easy to find yourself buying 6 different colors of green when you could simply mix it yourself. Once you have more cash you can always pick up those extra shades just to make your life easier.

Metallic paint is the exception here. It doesn't really mix well. My most used is a Vallejo gun metal or Citadel Lead belcher(formerly boltgun metal).

Also the army painter has some good colored primer. A good option for tyranids is to spray with their "Skeleton Bone" primer and then paint the carapace(shell) with a darker contrasting color.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Oh and pick up a brownish colored wash as well.
