Black Powder - whos into it and what are you doing?

Just what the title says.
I am picking up my copy Saturday and am curious if anyone out there can give me their experience with the system.
I've heard really good things and I want to run post civil war land skirmishes but use regulars - ex civil war vets versus Indians and other skirmish style bandits..
How much work am I looking at to bring mounted gun toting bandits alive?

Great question. I was thinking of using this for some 1862 Lakota Uprising games, but am uncertain how it will work with warbands vs. regulars.

I've played Force on Force and I like the way irregulars get to maneuver around the board, I think it would work great for braves getting the drop on former civil war soldiers.
I like the idea of a group of soldiers being able to draw on their experience from the war and implement some of those tactics against a completely different foe.

I was always thinking of doing French and Indian war. I bought the Last of the Mohicans set to paint up and see how the sculpts are. At the worst they could be painted and put on the shelf in a loose diorama setting.

Seems like cool stuff though.

I'd love a 28mm Joseph Brandt though for revolutionary war skirmish. Family history goes back a ways with that man.

Black Powder - whos into it and what are you doing?

For the period you are proposing, I would suggest that Black Powder is perhaps not the most useful ruleset.

While they can handle skirmish games, the linear tactics implied in the support rules, and the way it handles cavalry in particular make it problematic for the small scale Western style games. Also you would be looking at a minimum of fifty or sixty figures a side to get the game up and running.

My suggestion would be get a some specfic skirmish rules - http://www.freewargamesrules.co.uk/19th-century.html - as the link says these are free rules.

Re:Black Powder - whos into it and what are you doing?

im a big fan of the rules . fun beer and pretzels fun . i like it because in 28mm you can use giant tables and tons of minatures . i do napoleonics and do the zulu wars of 1879 . im currently working on civil war stuff . only catch is the game is more fun with lots and lots of minitures .its easy to convert the rules to differnt scale as you see fit but is a great deal of fun . any time period that has plastic minatures is your best bet for your buck .
