Charging/Block Size Question

Alright this question came up today and we tried to look up the rule but it was non-existent. So I want to see if you guys can help!

Essentially this is the scenario: three units declare a charge on a block of Dwarf Hammerers. The Dwarf Hammerers were set up so that he was about 6-8 ranks deep with 4 going across. Essentially, all three blocks are in the front arc - HOWEVER, because of the size of the blocks charging in (it was a unit of zombies, crypt ghouls, and one vargulf), they could not all go into the front arc for combat. It gets even weirder because the way the Vargulf was positioned, he was about 60% inside the front arc and 40% in the flank arc.

So the question is how is this resolved?

1) you choose which units to charge and if they can't fit - they cannot charge?
2) fit the two largest bases in the front, and since the vargulf has at least some access to flank it goes there?
3) force the opponent to maximize his block so that they can all fit?
4) force yourself to change the size of your block so that they can all fit?

I was arguing for the first one - since it would make the most sense, but others were arguing for the second one. I see it as all charges are looked at from the person RECEIVING THE CHARGE, so if you are all in front, you charge the front no matter if you cannot fit and scribble your way to the flank

Please help

Charging/Block Size Question

When it comes to resolving the charges, you prioritise which two units you want to be in the combat and resolve their charges in first, after that provided they both made it the third unit either fails the charge or hopes it can make it in in place of one of the other two units if it failed the charge.

Charging/Block Size Question

assuming that all the units are a fresh charge on the same turn.

your opponent has to declare his chargers as his first action, he has declared that 3 of his units (sequentially) will charge your hammerers and each time you elected to hold (because your not a cowardly dwarf...or your just too stubborn to back down).

should he have been successful in terms of distance with all 3 units, and it only possible to maximise with two of the units, i.e. only 2 will fit, then the third will not be able to charge and will automatically fail the charge.

regardless of % value in another facing so long as you are in one arc the most that is the arc you are in, you cannot get a flank charge just because the flank your most in is full, otherwise you could argue that the front was full but your 1% in the flank so I get a flank charge now (taking it to an extreme but you get my point).

also worth noting that in the example, it should be possible to place them all with the bit beasty in the centre and the two units on the flanks of it but it would depend greatly on starting position and distance rolled (at least a little, the movement to rank up gets a little grey)

Charging/Block Size Question

Things to remember.
You can only ever charge the facing you are in. You do not get to 'end up' in another facing (flank, rear et.)
If you can't fit your charge fails.
If one unit charges and fails to make it he can quite easily block the others from charging which would be a huge risk if you are squeezing 3 units into 1 combat.
I hope you remembered if the unit is only 4 wide and 6-8 deep he gets 0 rank bonus for combat resolution. Units must be at least 5 wide to get rank bonus.
What were the sizes of the undead units?
Not sure why you would want to try squeeze all 3 into the 1 combat, especially if you aren't getting a flank.
