Re:debating on picking up Escalation

Not worth it. It's a zero-content reprint of some Apocalypse units with a "you can use your superheavy in a normal game" statement attached. No fluff, no new art (unless you count more slight variants of the same old catalog pictures of the Baneblade), and no new units. And the dominant attitude seems to be "Apocalypse stuff stays in Apocalypse" so you aren't likely to get a chance to use your new toys.

Re:debating on picking up Escalation

Totally worth it. Really fun expansion to the rules. Peregrine is exaggerating - there's the specific new Lords of War rules, a new warlord chart, and 9 new missions. If you already have the Apocalypse book, you're going to find a reprint of the apocalyptic template rules, all the relevant super heavy rules and of course the data sheets for a number of the super heavies. Personally, I'm glad they reprinted them so I don't have to pull down that thick tome of a textbook every time I run a super heavy. But if they didn't reprint them, everyone would be howling at the top of their lungs that GW made the Apoc book mandatory when much of it doesn't apply to standard 40k.

Escalation is a hell of a lot of fun. The trick to it is understanding that just like running flyers and AV14, certain units have no place in lower point games. Only a jerk would run a Land Raider or a Heldrake in a 750pt game. And only that same jerk would run a Revenent Titan in an 1850pt game. I think games using Fortifications and Escalation generally should be run in the 2250+ range. I think you'll find that if you add a superheavy and a fortification to a 2500pt army, you'll end up with roughly the same sized army as if you were running a standard 1850pt one without them. Maybe even smaller if you go nuts with the SH and fort.

Re:debating on picking up Escalation

It's actually $49.50.

I got it and tried out a ~2k points game with the Transcendent C'tan and he was pretty stupidly OP and detracted from the game.

Its mandatory to bring the proper tools to a game of Escalation, and there's certainly potential for fun with it. It's really easy to make it one-sided, so perhaps approaching the game type with a competitive attitude is unwise.

The book is too expensive for what it is. I actually somewhat regretted it after I thumbed through it the first time. The game of Escalation itself it kinda neat though.

debating on picking up Escalation

I've played two games of Escalation, one at 1500 and one at 2000.

The 1500 point one I brought a Malcador and the game ended in a 3-3 tie. The opponent did not bring a superheavy.

The 2000 point one I brought 212 'Arethusa' (the Special Character Baneblade from ForgeWorld) who was also my warlord. My opponent brought a Warhound Titan.

The game ended in minor victory for me, 13-15.

On the whole, I've enjoyed the hell out of Escalation and do not regret buying it (although I did buy the ebook edition at $36.00 and not the real book at 50).

I wanted a hard-cover version so I didn't constantly need to have some electronic device (in my case, a laptop, because I hate trying to read tiny phone screens for rules questions), and was even willing to pay to get both the E-version and the book version if there was some sort of cheapness or something (like, a 15-20 dollar book version).

But $50? Feth that - get the ebook.
