UFC 168: Wiedman v Silva

So finally winding down from the fights tonight, and aside from the brutal way the Silva fight ended, it was a solid evening.

Loved watching Rowdy work over Tate for two rounds before ending it. Travis Brownes KO was wicked, but I think Michael Johnson had the knockout of the night vs Glieson.

I think I'm going to have nightmares about poor Anderson Silva's devastated leg. One of the few times I've been happy to be at a bar and didn't hear the sound. Apparently the screaming was....loud.

For those of you that didn't see it, I'm linking it. But be warned. It's awful.

Yay a fellow UFC fan. Great night of fights tonight that ended on a sour note.

Brown is impressing me again and again.

Rouseys Judo was great her hip throws are fantastic. She keeps hitting that armbar.

I wish Silva all the best but I think his carrer is over. Really hope he recovers. I have hit enough shins in Muay Thai to know how much shin on shin contact alone hurts. I cant even imagine the pain he is going through at the moment.

Great night of fights.

Bummed that Jim Miller didn't get submission of the night. That was high level jujitsu he showcased. Rousey got it for an arm bar (shocker) that wasn't all that impressive. Can't stand her, personally. Or Miesha for that matter.

I think tonight is the end of the road for Leben, but glad Uriah Hall found his killer instinct. That dude is a beast when he unleases it.

So happy Barnett got ktfo'd. People need to stop underestimating Travis Browne.

Silvas walkout was ridiculous. Felt like it was longer then the actual fight. His leg damn near wrapped around Weidmans leg. Sick, and probably end of the road for him, as he's 38 and thats an injury that will take serious time to heal, if ever He was hinting at retirement in the buildup to this fight, and Weidman checking his kick probably made the decision for him. Ariel Helwani said he was screaming all the way to the ambulance. Glad I was at a bar too.

Gonna be a great time for UFC fans, with Silva probably done and GSP fighting his demons in his dark place, a lot of new stars are going to be made in the next few years.

Yeah he seemed to be turning it up a little in the second round too. Weidman was dominating that fight up until that point.

Its a shame to see him go out on such an injury. Especially in a semi fluke way. I say semi fluke because the check was perfect and would have hurt silva regardless but for his shin to snap like that is very rare.

As I said elsewhere in the interwebs...

Tate had to keep the fight up, and make it more of a "boxing" match instead of a grappling match, because she would completely lose that.

Sorry, but a high-school wrestling champ vs. an olympic judo medalist = no contest.

RR's stand-up game needed to be challenged...and Tate *should* have been the one to try doing that, but instead, from the sounds of it, she kept trying to get in close and got her ass tossed to the ground.

If you are fighting to win, don't get suckered into trying to match yourself against the opponents's strength.

If their strength is grappling, throws, and submissions....you avoid it at all costs.

The crowd isn't in there fighting. You are. The crowd isn't getting their arm cranked on. You are. It's *your* fight...so do what you need to do in order to win--and that may mean going against what the crowd wants to see!

Too often I see fighters get sucked in by the crowd's expectations of how they should fight the fight--and end up losing!

Tate really needed to keep RR at a distance---pepper her with jabs and combos. Cliche as it may be, but she needed to "stick and move" to neutralize RR's grappling capability.

Instead, she shot in (due to frustration, I believe) and ended up paying heavily for it.

Real tough to watch.

As to the Rowdy-Tate fight: Rowdy looked much better on her feet than I think Tate expected, and I think that prompted her shooting, which was just moronic on her part. Some of Rhonda's throws from her shots were just beautiful.

I think Rhonda is going to have to go against a high level female boxer that can grapple to be put in danger. It'll be interesting with McCann, as she's an Olympic level wrestler, to see how good Rowdys ground game really is. But she's clearly better on the ground than Tate, and it isn't real close.

UFC 168: Wiedman v Silva

Yeah, its the second time this kind of break has happened in the UFC. Happens more often in soccer than MMA but still nasty to see

Tate kept locking up Ronda on the back and side leaving her perfectly open for judo throws and trips.

Tbh Tates striking isnt that great but it was the best place for her to beat Ronda but she played into Rouseys game to much. Give her a decent fight despite that but it wasnt enough.

Mccann has much better striking and grappling than tate so it will be intresting to see if she can prevent the takedowns and keep it standing against Ronda. Sometimes Judo throws and trips will suprise wrestlers as they are less used to dealing with them than your standard takedowns.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Ufc Annoucment

"Following Saturday evening's UFC 168 main event, former champion Anderson Silva was taken to a local Las Vegas hospital where he underwent surgery to repair a broken left leg. The successful surgery, performed by Dr. Steven Sanders, the UFC's Orthopedic Surgeon, inserted an intramedullary rod into Anderson's left tibia. The broken fibula was stabilized and does not require a separate surgery. Anderson will remain in the hospital for a short while, but no additional surgery is scheduled at this time. Recovery time for such injuries may vary between three and six months.

"Anderson is deeply touched by the outpouring of support from his fans and the entire MMA community. There has been no immediate decision about his future, and he would kindly ask for privacy at this time as he deals with his injury and prepares to return home to recover."

Corey Hill, the first UFC fighter to have this happen came back after 13 months and went 4-4. Kevin Ware, the NCAA b-ball player suffered an even more gruesome version of this injury and came back around a year later. Silva is a wealthy dude, so he'll get the best surgeons and therapy money can buy, if the UFC isn't already giving that to him.

I'm sure age plays a part as well though, and with Silva pushing 40, he may most certainly be done. It just sucks to think thats how he's going out. Greatest of all time gets retired by a checked kick. The always popular Vitor is having an explosive (TRT* induced?) career resurgence at the moment, and Lyoto is one of the best counter-strikers in the UFC who moved down to middleweight. Ronaldo Souza is also a serious contender to the middleweight belt, and I think he will get the belt or at least a title shot within a year. Its about that time of the year for Michael Bisping to start talking about his title aspirations and how he deserves it, despite only looking impressive against cans and lower tier fighters.

There are some decent to borderline elite other fighters in the middleweight division, but I wouldn't call it stacked by any means.

edit: *TRT as in Testosterone Replacement Therapy, and not The Red Thirst.

Now is a great time to get back into MMA, as there is alot of new, young talent taking the reins from the Old Guard, as they retire or get cut. Also, the season of The Ultimate Fighter after this upcoming one, that looks to be a snorefest, will return that program to relevance, as it establishes a new weight class and its champion for female fighters. The fights will actually matter and I think it will be so much more intense. That show needs the shot in the arm that female fighters bring to the sport.

Thanks for the response though seriously, not sarcastic at all.

And lol I forgot all about bisping.

I've been into MMA for about 10 years now and train as well. So I'm definately not a new comer just out of the UFC loop as 55$ a PPV is way to much to pay and I always have my live streams shut down ;( edit:misread your post yah I definately have gotten the UFC but again lately and will probably try and get some people to throw down for PPV's more.

Just go to a hooters :-).
Maybe they aren't but I hit a FBI shield page, and that was the last time I tried ;p.

And I couldn't believe it myself. The closest hooters is 53 minutes and the nearest bwww is almost 50(same town lol). The chili's like 25min away used to show them but they stopped. And now it's one bar like really erratically.

Anyways it would like to see jacare fight for a title again. I've loved watching him since Roger Gracie broke his arm and Souza went on to win in a jiu jitsu match a couple years ago.

Also when did machida move down in weight and how does he look at 185? He was always smaller than every at LHW. So I bet he's a badass at the lower weight. And now that silva is out of the way machida won't duck title fights...

Vitor is pretty much guaranteed a shot as long as he will take a fight in the us for a change,

Pretty sure Dana even said he was the 1# contender during the post fit presser.

I love watching Souza fight.

Big of a shake up in the UFC recently landscape is starting to change and reins of dominance are coming to an end.

Silva dethroned then injured

Gsp retired/taking a hiatus, he has given up the belt

Petis took hendersons belt I a. Long awaited rematch.

Jon jones got seriously tested in his last fight, some even have a child argument fr thinking he lost but the fight was close enough you could make that argument either way

Then we have the women's division, ATM it's just a vehicle for rousey but it will grow given time.

Not been a fan of tuf for years now. To much drama not enough training and fighting. I would watch a season of tuf that didn't even have cameras outside of the gym. I watched an episode of the rousey Tate series but it was just people bitching at each other.

I don't think it's possible for a Thai boxer to be the same after a break like that so I agree. Obviously no competitor ever wants to give in but silva should really think about his future here and maybe throw the towel in knowing that he created a legacy for himself. I'm not sure I would if I was in his position but I haven't ever broken a bone or torn a ligament so I can't say anything to that. Closest I've come is throwing my back out a few times.

I'm still baffled by the GSP stuff and wish him the best as outside of shogun and fedor he's my probably my favorite fighter of all time.

Exactly. That's one thing people who haven't done serious competition don't get. The physical differences between fighters are much more minuscule than youd think but mental prep and health accounts for so much.
Re:UFC 168: Wiedman v Silva

Looks like Anderson Silva wants one more chance against Chris Weidman.

From CagePotato.com, with their usual humorous commentary of the situation:

I’m not sure if this is good news or bad news, but Anderson Silva has no plans to retire following his sickening leg break at UFC 168, and the former middleweight champ is looking for a third fight against Chris Weidman as soon as he recovers. In fact, Silva is already trying to build heat for a re-rematch, crapping all over Weidman’s latest win in a new interview with Globo. As MMAFighting’s Guilherme Cruz translates:

“I believe that, if you pay attention to these technical details, you will see that (Weidman checking the kick) was instinct, not something that he trained to do,” Silva said. “No, I don’t think (Weidman should consider it a win). It was an accident. And I’m pretty sure I would have won the fight…

“To land the perfect kick, I needed to distract him by punching him in the face so he wouldn’t pay attention to the kick. He was protecting the upper part of his body, and the raised leg instinctively. The kick was so strong he lost balance…I saw my mistake, and now I’m only worried about my comeback. If the UFC thinks I deserve another opportunity (against Weidman) or if I need to earn it. I just want to do what I do, it doesn’t matter if it’s for the title or not. I want to do what I do well.”

Yes, Anderson, he raised his leg instinctively — almost as if he’d been drilling the defensive technique for months and was doing it on muscle-memory alone. Since the fight, Weidman has repeatedly stated that checking leg-kicks was a specific part of his gameplan going into his second meeting with Silva, so to imply that the checked kick was in any way “accidental” is absurd, and kind of disrespectful. Plus, Silva is “pretty sure [he] would have won the fight” if his leg didn’t snap in half? Congrats, Andy — you have officially entered the loss-justification leaderboard, somewhere between “the Japanese poisoned my food” and “I had a cracked skull, bro.”

Anderson’s desire to return to action is even crazier when you consider how agonizing his recovery has been to this point:

Right after he suffered the injury, “The Spider” wondered if he would ever walk again.

“The only thing I was thinking was ‘is it over? Will I walk again?’” he said “I was scared that I wouldn’t walk again. Many things were going through my head at that moment. I’m 38 now, and I will be 39 in April. That’s what I’m afraid of, but I’m confident that I will. I will be back”…

The MMA legend is still in pain, and he revealed that sometimes he asks his wife to take him for a ride around Los Angeles so he can just sit and cry away from his kids. Pain is part of Silva’s routine now, and he can’t even sleep without it.

“When I landed the kick I heard a loud noise, the sound of a bone breaking, and the pain was huge. And since I left the hospital, I can’t sleep,” he said. “It’s really hard. I think about it, and I wondered why. ‘Why, my God, I had to go through all this?’ I wonder which message He’s trying to teach me at this moment.”

Jeez, I don’t know. Maybe He’s telling you to walk away now while you still have your mental faculties? Maybe He’s teaching you a painful lesson about hubris? Maybe bad things happen to good people because God doesn’t actually intervene in the lives of human beings, positively or negatively? Like, He’s content to just hang back and watch, and it’s up to us to avoid breaking our legs? Maybe God doesn’t actually like MMA in the first place, and has always preferred boxing and pro-wrestling?

According to athletes who have already lived through what Silva is dealing with, the Spider will never be the same after this. He’s been a professional MMA fighter for over 16 years, and his daily life is now filled with inescapable pain. As an outsider looking in, I can’t comprehend why any fighter — especially one who has already established himself as the greatest of all time — would want to further risk his health, just to have a third fight against a guy who already beat him twice. Of course, Silva is crazy like a champion, and I’m just some regular shmuck. But still, is it really worth it?
