Ink - when do you apply it? Before basecoating? After layering?

I love using inks. Citadel's Nuln Oil is my favorite.

The question is - how do you *use* it properly? Do you apply it after priming but before painting so you have all the layers visible? Do you apply it after everything else to add some final detail? What?

Ink - when do you apply it? Before basecoating? After layering?

Well Nuln Oil is more of a wash than an Ink.
I use washes by doing my prime layer, then basecoating then put it in the cracks and crevices or over the entire model depending on where I want it and the look I am going for, then either re apply base layer so that the wash in only in the cracks and then highlight.
Or instead of redoing baselayer I go straight to highlights.

It depends on the look you are going for though because sometimes you want it everywhere and sometimes you want it just in the crevices.

That has been my experience with it anyways.

I use GW shades mid layering. I personally layer up the highlights twice, wash, layer again then apply the final highlight.

I normally apply 2 different washes after base coating.

Though I I went back to the GW washes I would apply them just before the last highlight as a a combi-shade/glaze.

Ink - when do you apply it? Before basecoating? After layering?

It depends entirely on the effect you're trying to produce.
for example,
If I'm undercoating in white, I use a thinned inkwash to pick out detail before I paint.
