Got an airbrush for Christmas!

Hey dakka!

So, my father was super awesome and got me an airbrush for Christmas (the fact that I just finished college probably had something to do with it wooo). So, I have been practicing for a few days and here are the first results. Overall I think they are pretty decent. I intend to mainly use the airbrush for base coating, highlighting, and washing/inking whole squads or larger models like tanks and land speeders etc. I still like to use a brush for the details and personal touches. If I can get good enough I am hoping to eventually be able to do some en masse painting for commission, but I have a ways to go yet.

I still have a lot to learn - especially regarding how thin each specific paint needs to be... I've gone through a lot of airbrush cleaner already... oh well, it's a learning process!

Keep in mind that these are strictly test models (besides maybe the dread) so excuse the horrid mold lines and incomplete bits etc.

Spoiler:

Got an airbrush for Christmas!

Grats! You jumped in pretty deep with the OSL straight away, they came out well too! The different colours/chapters was a good way to practice to see how the different colours go with the pre shading. When getting a red for my Blood Ravens, I did 15 models with different shades and combinations of red to get it just right... so hard to choose hahah.

Are you enjoying it? I love using the airbrush, regardless of how effective it is for painting. Did you enjoy how much faster and easier it was to get a good basecoat compared to a brush? Basecoating with a brush = zzzz. Basecoating with an airbrush = hell yeah! ; )

Now that you have an airbrush, you'll definitely want to look into part assembling before painting. I know you said these were test models, but it bears mentioning - it'll make it much easier to get good highlights and coverage.

I'd highly recommend the following youtube channels if you're interested in tutorials to improve your skill with the airbrush:
- Buypainted - my favourite, enough so that I paid to subscribe to his videos on his own site, but he has heaps of good videos on youtube still.
- Awesomepaintjob / Les Bursley - Damn talented bloke.
- Wargamers Consortium - Bunch of guys (including Les iirc) with a great range of videos.

Sorry if you knew any of this, but couldn't hurt to mention it ; )

In fact, I am subscribed to all of those channels and it is them who inspired me to get the airbrush in the first place. Les is fantastic!

I am unsure what you mean by "part assembling" painting. Is this painting the parts separately and then gluing them together afterwards? or do you mean painting all similar parts so that they look the same?

I mainly got the airbrush to do a really good pre-shade, basecoat, highlight and maybe wash and then go in with the brush and paint anything else. It makes the process great for doing larger squads. It took a long time to do the original group above because of all the paint color changes. I can see that if I did "all green" models in one go for my DA that could expedite the process immensely. Not only that, but it gets paint on the models so even if I don't finish them immediately, at least they will be colored instead of flat black or grey etc. I am really excited to start work on my 3 battlewagons and 2 dakkajets and soon to be Crusader.

- VardenV2

I finished the dreadnought a few days ago (minus the base).
