1999+1 Imperial Gaurd TAC List

I am trying to put together a TAC style list using pure IG. Looking for some C&C about my choices. I will post a run down of my unit choices at the end of the list.

HQ:
CCS - Astropath, Lascannon, Chimera - 165pts

Lord Comissar - Boltgun, Power weapon - 80pts

Troops:

Ifantry Platoon:
PCS - 4x Flamer - 50pts
Infatry Squad(4x) - Sergeant, Power Axe - 60pts each

Vets - 3x melta - 100pts

Vets - 3x melta, Chimera - 155pts

Vets - 3x Plasma, Lascannon, Chimera - 190pts

Vets - 3x Plasma, Lascannon, Chimera - 190pts

Fast Attack:

Hellound - 130pts

Vendetta - 130pts

Vendetta - 130pts

Heavy Support:

Hydra Flak Tanks - 75pts

Leman Russ Exterminator - Lascannon - 165pts

Ordinance Battery:
Griffon - 75pts
Basilisk - 125pts

Total pts: 2000

Ok so this list has a lot of things going on. The core is obviosly the mech vet squads in chimeras. They can be used to either rush the enemy or just sit back and take picks on the enemy. The blob squad will be joined by the Lord Comissar to be used to either hold back field objectives or to bubble wrap tanks against cc oriented armies. The two vendettas offer great anti-tank and with the melta vets in one and the flamer PCS in the other they can be used for some late game objective grabs. Hellhound is kind of a wild card, I like that it has AV 12 on all side and the torrent flamer makes it possible to actually get a flame attack off without the assault retaliation. That being sad the hellhound is almost a suicide unit since it will most likely be targeted first while it rushes up the table. The Exterminator is my jack of all trades tank. While I wish I had points to put Pask in there for now it will just have to deal with BS 3 and lower strength shots. I know some people will tell me to drop the hydra but I like what it brings to the table. Early pressure on any skimmers flying around and mid and late game anti air capabilities. Finally the ordinance battery. This is another jack of all trades unit, with the griffon allowing my basilisk to have a higher chance at hitting whatever target I want to disappear.

So there is the list, let me know what you think.

Owl

Keep the Plasma vets, lose the lascannons. The Plasma will net you more kills on broadsides, crisis suits, and marines than melta will.

Ditch the Hydra and the artillery, and replace them with Manticores. Manticores are excellent against all targets.

Other than that it looks good to me. Maybe put some autocannons on the blob, or if you squeezed for points the Lord Commissar isn't necessarily a necessity.

I take a Lascannon Exterminator because it makes the Exterminator a swiss army knife type of Russ that can engage any kind of target and at least do some damage. I take an Exterminator with a Lascannon in almost every game just for the versatility it affords me.

I am actually more worried about horde armies like daemons with large numbers of assault units and re-rollable saves.

Also the problem with melta is range, at 12 inches sometimes I am hard pressed to get guns on target. That's why I put one squad of melta vets in the vendetta to bring them up close to the tanks they need to deal with

The lascannon on the Exterminator is a coin flip but I am not sure what to spend the extra 15pts on.

ultimentra wrote:Keep the Plasma vets, lose the lascannons. Sometimes I just camp the chimeras and las whatever tank/transport is trying to get close to me then when the troops are out I move up to finish with the plasma.

The problems I have with manticores is that they can't hit fliers, they have worse ap then the basilisk, and they are a little to variable for me. Sure sometimes you get 3 large blast that hit but more often if they are out of LOS you are getting 1 large blast that scatters harmlessly away. I may revisit putting 1 manticore in but I will have to play a few games with one first.

I like the Lord Commissar because he makes the blob almost unbreakable with LD 10 and stubborn. Great for getting off orders or just tar-pitting a squad. If I find something that requires some points I could swap in for a commissar in the platoon but for now I think I will leave him.

I also love the Exterminator, twin linked autocannons are pretty awesome I just wish I had 50 points lying around to give the tank pask for the higher strength shots.

Re:1999+1 Imperial Gaurd TAC List

You've got some good things in here and some things that I think definitely would do better with changes. Your Fast Attack selection is great, pretty much identical to mine.

The first problem is the Lascannons dotted between the different squads. Currently you're putting 60 points towards 3 S9 AP2 shots that will only get to fire at full BS, realistically, for about 1-2 turns. While it is true that high strength AP2~ weapons are important and needed in a competitive list, I'd say that you have more than enough between your plasma, melta and Vendettas. Really, those 60 points are just a bit lackluster and tacked on, only situationally useful and relying heavily on luck to be advantageous.

The LR Exterminator isn't really needed at all, this list will decimate light-medium infantry and you should not struggle with light vehicles at all. If you're going to take a Leman Russ in this edition I'd for sure, any day of the week make it the Executioner with no sponsons, maybe with a hull Lascannon. Its effective against heavy infantry, light vehicles, heavy monstrous creatures, you name it and presents a great threat.

The Hydra isn't really needed, I'd take an Aegis Defense Line with Quad Gun instead. There are several reasons for doing this:
1) It is unquestionably better than the Hydra at AA and you get effective light AT as you can fire at ground targets at full BS.
2) Your mega platoon has hard cover, when going to ground they are essentially unkillable en masse as per the usual with that 2+ cover save.

The Lord Commissar will work for now, but I would say you should seriously consider getting an Inquisitor from the new Digital Codex instead in his place. He's cheaper, gives your blob prescience for absurd firepower, has essentially the same statline -1 WS (but gaining a Force Sword from the Psyker upgrade and Psykout grenades for reducing psychic MC's to I1) and also comes with inbuilt Stubborn LD10, which is a straight upgrade over what the Commissar provides in the morale department.

In addition, if you take an Ordo Xenos one you can reduce the toughness and force random effects on the things the blob gets locked in combat with, or with Ordo Malleus you can have a Terminator Inquisitor with a rending 4 shot Autocannon and Force Thunder Hammer that massacres MC's. Depending on your definition of TAC the Psyoccolum the Ordo Hereticus has that gives the entire unit BS10 when shooting at psykers+ units with psykers in could be considerably useful for tackling those lists where they're the backbone of your opponent.
