JJ 40K. Have you considered Dwarfs. You would have no magic but the ability to negate it well enough, a very big potential for a ranged army, and some decent CC troops.

As for Vampires although I don't use them and only have experience fighting them i would say magic should be quite high on the agenda for a vampire army. And also with wood elves although they have great BS and make a good ranged army you have to consider that magic is also important for them too. However if you really do love vampires I would give them a go possibly use stand-ins for a battle or two and see if you like their playstyle? Also vamps do have some very nasty CC units e.g. crypt horrors
