Basing ideas.

I need to base some Samurai Miniatures. I am thinking about doing so as a muddy field maybe in autumn so some fallen leaves and maybe a few cherry blossoms. Problem is I have no idea how I am going to do it. I was thinking of maybe using the muddy base paint from games workshop with some static grass on top but I think that may be expensive and not look very good.

So I am appealing to those who are more experienced than me to help give me ideas and tips on how to base my miniatures, if you have tutorials as well that would be great..

It doesn't have to be a muddy field in autumn as long as it look good with Samurai miniatures and is suitable for single miniatures as well as ranked up miniatures because I will be placing the individual miniatures on pennies but also ranking them up in movement trays with cutouts.

Thanks everyone.

Basing is so much fun. There's many ways you can do it, you could simply scoop up some dirt from outsite and mix it with a bit of white glue to create your ground, and then paint on top of that! Best part is dirt is free!

Fancier ways would be to mix in some sand in with the fine dirt, to break up the grain size and add interest, maybe a few pebbles painted as rocks, also free.

Paint-wise I'd avoid citadel paints if you're painting a lot of bases, as they're expensive. That being said, their washes are great for bases and economical.

Not sure what you have in the UK, but at Walmart in the US there's these Apple Barrel acrylic craft paints that are super cheap, like $0.57 per bottle and you get a lot of paint for that price. They're perfect for basing and they drybrush well.

For foliage and stuff, tea leaves work great, and you can recycle them from used teabags. There are fancier alternatives for autumnal leaves. The cherry blossoms I've seen similar stuff, pink-red flowers for model trains, Woodland Scenics makes a lot of this stuff.

Check out Antocenetis workshop there in the UK, they have some great stuff for basing and dioramas.
