I just tried my first game last week and loved it. I picked up the core rulebook and the necron codex. I have come up with 3 2k point army lists that I would like everyone's opinions on.

(first)

2000 Pts - Codex: Necrons Roster - Test 2

Total Roster Cost: 1995

HQ: Overlord (1#, 225 pts)
1 Overlord, Voidblade Mindshackle Scarabs Sempiternal Weave Tesseract Labyrinth Resurrection Orb Phase Shifter

HQ: Overlord (1#, 225 pts)
1 Overlord, Voidblade Mindshackle Scarabs Sempiternal Weave Tesseract Labyrinth Resurrection Orb Phase Shifter

Troops: Immortals (11#, 270 pts)
10 Immortals,
1 Night Scythe,

Troops: Immortals (11#, 270 pts)
10 Immortals,
1 Night Scythe,

Fast Attack: Destroyers (5#, 260 pts)
5 Destroyers, Heavy Gauss Cannon

Fast Attack: Destroyers (5#, 260 pts)
5 Destroyers, Heavy Gauss Cannon

Heavy Support: Doom Scythe (1#, 175 pts)
1 Doom Scythe

Heavy Support: Doom Scythe (1#, 175 pts)
1 Doom Scythe

Fast Attack: Canoptek Scarabs (9#, 135 pts)
9 Canoptek Scarabs

Composition Report:
HQ: 2 (1 - 2)
Elite: 0 (0 - 3)
Troops: 2 (2 - 6)
Fast: 3 (0 - 3)
Heavy: 2 (0 - 3)
Fort: 0 (0 - 1)

(second)

2000 Pts - Codex: Necrons Roster - Test 3

Total Roster Cost: 1965

HQ: Overlord (1#, 195 pts)
1 Overlord, Voidblade Mindshackle Scarabs Sempiternal Weave Tesseract Labyrinth Phase Shifter

Troops: Warriors (6#, 165 pts)
5 Warriors,
1 Night Scythe,

Troops: Warriors (6#, 165 pts)
5 Warriors,
1 Night Scythe,

Heavy Support: Doom Scythe (1#, 175 pts)
1 Doom Scythe,

Heavy Support: Doom Scythe (1#, 175 pts)
1 Doom Scythe,

Heavy Support: Doom Scythe (1#, 175 pts)
1 Doom Scythe,

Fast Attack: Destroyers (5#, 260 pts)
5 Destroyers, Heavy Gauss Cannon

Fast Attack: Destroyers (5#, 260 pts)
5 Destroyers,Heavy Gauss Cannon

Elite: C'Tan Shard (1#, 245 pts)
1 C'Tan Shard, Swarm of Spirit Dust Time's Arrow

Fast Attack: Canoptek Scarabs (10#, 150 pts)
10 Canoptek Scarab

Composition Report:
HQ: 1 (1 - 2)
Elite: 1 (0 - 3)
Troops: 2 (2 - 6)
Fast: 3 (0 - 3)
Heavy: 3 (0 - 3)
Fort: 0 (0 - 1)

(and the final build...I did this just to see what I could do...I don't even know how playable it would be)

2000 Pts - Codex: Necrons Roster - Death From Above

Total Roster Cost: 2000

Heavy Support: Doom Scythe (1#, 175 pts)
1 Doom Scythe

Heavy Support: Doom Scythe (1#, 175 pts)
1 Doom Scythe

Heavy Support: Doom Scythe (1#, 175 pts)
1 Doom Scythe

HQ: Overlord (1#, 135 pts)
1 Overlord, Voidblade Mindshackle ScarabsTesseract Labyrinth

Troops: Warriors (6#, 165 pts)
5 Warriors,
1 Night Scythe,

Troops: Warriors (6#, 165 pts)
5 Warriors,
1 Night Scythe,

Troops: Warriors (6#, 165 pts)
5 Warriors,
1 Night Scythe,

Troops: Warriors (6#, 165 pts)
5 Warriors,
1 Night Scythe

Troops: Warriors (6#, 165 pts)
5 Warriors
1 Night Scythe

Troops: Warriors (6#, 165 pts)
5 Warriors
1 Night Scythe

Fast Attack: Destroyers (5#, 260 pts)
5 Destroyers Heavy Gauss Cannon

Fast Attack: Canoptek Scarabs (6#, 90 pts)
6 Canoptek Scarabs

Composition Report:
HQ: 1 (1 - 2)
Elite: 0 (0 - 3)
Troops: 6 (2 - 6)
Fast: 2 (0 - 3)
Heavy: 3 (0 - 3)
Fort: 0 (0 - 1)

I would love to hear everyones thoughts on these builds. Please remember though I am a total noob at this (I am using proxies for my armies at this time...I am hoping my group accepts the proxies I am making this week out of poster board. I found the base sizes for each unit...used a ruler and a compass to draw the bases for each model (81 bases for 3 armies) Labeled each base with the unit and size, cut them out with an exato knife, and am gluing a picture of each unit onto them....that cost me about $20 and after buying the books is all I can afford at this time). (EDIT: Removed the excess point values like I should have done in the first place).

Ok, hi and welcome to the hobby, firstly loose the points values on the units, Forum rules prohibit displaying points cost for GW army lists, its something GW get very angry about.... Anger not the sleeping Dragons.

Secondly facing 2000 points worth of proxy base models would be my own personal version of hell, its understandable to not have much dosh left over after buying into 40k but even the most liberal player would balk at 2000 points of empty bases, start small, play a few games at 500 points then expand gradually as experience and money allow.

Actual Army criteque, I'm only just starting necrons myself so I wont be much use, that said, generic advice.

1. Try to keep your war-gear costs DOWN 225 points on one overlord is bad, 450 points between 2 of them is downright insane.

2. Immortals in scythes are awesome, but no need to take a full squad normally, 5 in a night scythe is the standard for late game objective snagging.

3. Warriors should normally be taken in fairly large blocks, their 4+ won;t stand up to much when most anti infantry weapons are AP4

4. Needs more Royal court, Crypteks and Necron Lords are a fantastic force multiplier to any army, take a basic Lord, give him a resurrection orb and for 65 points you get a fairly fighty character, a good weapon and something to keep your troops hanging around longer, Crypteks offer you soooo many options its always worth having one knocking about.

Haven't play tested Scarabs or Destroyers much so cant really help there.

TL;DR Start small learn what works well.

Re:Total noob playing necron's

sorry about the point posts I will keep them off in the future.

My group was the one that told me to do 2k point armies and use proxies (though they did not specify on the porxy type...last week I used someone else's models and a death star model for the doom scythe....I am hoping my ingenuity will count for something.

The only time I use warriors is in the 3rd build and that one is all about the planes...and like I said that one was more just to see what I could do with an air force.

I'll look into that warlord wargear cost issue. That wargear was recommended by my group but I am open to suggestions (though as I play Saturday I will probably keep as is until then at least.

I will also look into the smaller immortal squads...if nothing else shrinking those would enable me to increase my destroyer squads (I won my first game with them and a doom scythe against a 2k point Eldar army).

Ok...I believe that covers everything and thank you again.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
I do want to say that when I was a kid I did have experience with a different type of Wargaming, Avalon Hill's Gettysburg to be exact. My brother and I used to play it. If you think my flat base model design would be bad to play against it try using 1/8 inch cardboard cutouts for every unit that was in that battle in the actual civil war...and a few more that were going to show up if the battle had not ended when it did in real life. Fun but hard.

It might give you a slight benefit on the occasion you get a wound through a save on a multi wound enemy and remove their save and have others to benefit from that next turn if the combats still going, but the warscythe will easily be putting down more wounds.

Overlord charging MEQ WS4 T4, 3+

Warscythe - 1.66 dead marines
Voidblade - 0.66 dead marnies

TEQ T4, 2+, 3++

Warscythe - 1.11 dead terminators
Voidblade - 0.388 dead terminators

Monstrous creature WS4 T6, 2+

Warscythe - 1.33 wounds
Voidblade - 0.385 wounds (Therefore 0.385% chance of stripping save)

Riptide second round:

Warscythe - 1 wound
Voidblade - 0.5 wounds (If save stripped - This is where you could see benefit, but only if you had others in the combat also getting wounds and its not that great, for example 10 warriors would cause 0.83 wounds instead of 0.138)
Voidblade - 0.292 wounds (If save not stripped)
Voidblade - 0.373 wounds (Average taking into account possibility of stripping save previous turn - would increase to 1.065 if you take into account the extras caused by 10 warriors)

So, after 2 rounds, warscythe still clear winner against multi wound.

Confirmed. I'd like to say the Warscythe is the best weapon in the game, point for point. Give your Royal Court furious charge using Zandrehk and you have six Warscythes four attacks str 8 ap 1 instant killing meqs.
Hey man and welcome to neccys. Personally I prefer builds which use 5 man warrior squads in scythes for objective grabbing with wraiths and barges as the main hitting force. Also you really want more than 2 troops choices. If you play such a large game and only bring 2 troops then your enemy will target them first and once you lose them you can't win. If take around 4. Now at 1500 I use

Destroyer lord with scythe, mind shackle and weave.

Warrior squad of 5 guys with scythe (4 squads of these)

6 x wraiths
5 x wraiths

3 x annihilation barges. This comes to around 1475pts leaving you 525 points left to add juicy stuff

Tbh you always want 3 barges. They are one of the best units in the dex at 90pts for a av13 skimmer that on average gets more hits a turn than it fires!

Ok...I am changing the voidblades to warscythes. I would appriciate it if someone could give me a good 2k point build...with them letting me use proxies price isn't an immediate issue so don't worry about that. I will say that I fell in love with the Doom Scythe after my first game and how 2 of them completely decimated a 2k Eldar army in 2 rounds (by round 3 he had lost most of his force except for 2 monstrous creatures and 2 bike units.

Re:Total noob playing necron's

SpankingApe already suggested adding wraiths and a destroyerlord to your cronair which is a very, very powerful but cheesy list.

Wraiths are pointswise an extremely good unit. T4 really is one of their disadvantages but they have 3++ so live long enough.
I would play them with 2-3 whipcoils to remove their other downside, namely I2.
Adding a destroyerlord doesn't slow them down like other IC would and gives them preferred enemy.

Again, Ani Barges add an insane amount of firepower to your army for the points they cost.
But spamming them can again be seen as cheesy.

Also, Necron skimmers are very hardy.
As long as their quantum shielding is up, there is not much that can hurt them. And even when something penetrates, you still have a cover save most of the times.
But to be granted the cover save, they must have moved the previous turn.
So when you don't have the first player turn, make sure to deploy them behind cover.
