Solid basecoat or multiple colours for basecoat?

So I just assembled my first batch of miniatures: Eldar Guardians. I have also given them a black primer.

Going with a Green/Black colour scheme, I have no selected all the paints I want to use on the model. However, when I watch people paint on YouTube, a lot of people put a single base colour for the entire model. Is this how it should be done? I was thinking of getting a bunch of base paints and painting the various parts of the model in their appropriate colours.

For example, instead of just giving the Guardians a full base coat of Waaagh! Flesh I would paint the individual parts of the model in their appropriate colours, and use layer paints to highlight those parts later one. This is what I was thinking of doing:

---------------------------------------------------------------------
Armour Plates: Waaagh! Flesh
Areas underneath the plates: Abaddon Black
Gems: Caledor Sky
Eyes: Averland Sunset
Belt: Rhinox Hide
Gun: Zandri Dust
Triangle Ankh accessory on gun: Balthasar Gold

---------------------------------------------------------------------

So, would it be better to paint the Guardians in a uniform colour and then go over the base coat with the layer paints in order to get the colour scheme I want? Or should I just start using the base paints right away with the general colour scheme I want?

That's the way I do it. Some may have different opinions. I spray the black basecoats to darken shadowed areas and the bring up the paint with highlights and dry brush / wash process.
