Painting Noob...... Can or Brush?

Ahoy All!

Having completed my first scratchbuild model "Macharius" and getting stuck into my second "Crassus"... i am getting to the stage where i want to start getting into the paint job etc.

If you see my blog you will see i have allready had a go at basic painting using spray paints, some sponge, toothpicks.... and a little bit of salt..... with varying degrees of sucess. However i dont even own a brush.... or any "potted" paints.....

(In a way i am pretty chiffed with the results i have managed without anything more than the list above....) But i want to get more into it........

I am looking to start off my paint collection and am looking for any advice and tips for any basic colours i should start with.... what company suplies the best paints? are there 4 or 5 base colours i should be looking at... basically any advice would be appreciated!

I know this is a bit vague.... but any comments would be greatly appreciated.....

ps. I am looking to start creating my own "Rust Pigments" this evening.... so will keep you posted on how that goes!

Cheers All!

Painting Noob...... Can or Brush?

Sprays are good for vehicles though for any detail work you need brushes and/or an air brush.

GW paints are perfectly good, but expensive compared to alternatives such as Vallejo or Coat d'Arms.

In terms of base colours, you obviously need black and white. A medium grey is useful to avoid too much mixing. From there on it depends on what style of colour schemes you want to do.

You can mix anything you like from the basic spectrum of colours (blue, red, yellow, etc) and that's a good way to do individual character figures wearing clothes. For consistency on vehicles and equipment, it is better to decide the main colours you want to use in your scheme and buy ready made pots.

Suppliers of historical paints often do recommended sets such as German WW2 vehicle paints, and I would have a look at those for inspiration.

Hey Kilkrazy thanks for the reply!

Thats great thanks! I have heard that the GW paints were quite pricey... and have seen a lot of modellers use Vallejo.... so i will definetly have a look into these!

Thanks for the tip of the paint sets also.... sounds exactly what i am looking for... as currently i am only really modeling armour.... DKOK.... so something like a German WW2 set would be ideal!

Thanks again for yhour input!

Re:Painting Noob...... Can or Brush?

In my opinion, use a brush for figures, and for vehicles you can obviously use a brush, but I would think for time saving purposes (as well as your sanity) you should use a combination of spray cans/airbrush and paint brush for smaller details.

GW is perfectly fine for beginner painters but personally, I don't like their finish and the way they dry. They have too much of a sheen for my tastes. However, they're very easy to use and only really need water when thinning. You can also do all sorts of brush effects with them with ease, such as drybrushing, stippling, etc.

I've also used Tamiya paints extensively. They are alcohol based and dry out fairly quickly once on your palette as a result, but you get a very nice flat finish and only take a few layers until you get your desired effect. You can't dry brush with them, but they are also excellent for airbrushing from what I understand.

Finally, my favorite is Vallejo. In my opinion, their paints have excellent coverage and are very easy to work with. They also have a very wide range of acrylics and inks, a line of paints specifically for airbrushing, great metallics, and even a "game colour" line that uses their formulas to mimic GW paints (especially some of GW's older/discontinued colors). Some paints are a little thicker than others, but they can be thinned down with water. Personally, I use their acrylic thinner and I find it to be more effective than thinning with water from the tap. For larger paint jobs, I also use a retarder medium they make which prevents the paint from drying as fast, which helps save paint on your palette and keeps you from having to mix colors again, etc. I also consider Vallejo to be the best in terms of value. You get more paint per bottle and its cheaper than GW and Tamiya (I think). The paints even come in dropper bottles, which is incredibly useful for figuring out paint ratios when mixing colors, and helps you save paint and money in the long run.

There are other good paint ranges out there such as a P3, Army Painter, Reaper, but I have no experience with them. I'm sure other forum members can attest to their quality. I also have no experience with airbrushing (have the airbrush and supplies, just haven't mustered the courage yet!), and have only resumed the hobby this past March after taking a 10+ year hiatus. Hope this helps!

I have had a look at the Panzer Aces and they look spot on! Think these will be the ones i will end up going for....

On another note... i was just on ebay and managed to buy myself a bottle of Vallejo Air "Light Rust" ... so am i right in thinking this will be just a thinned down paint for airbrushes but potentially could be used for things like sponge work etc...... It was very cheap on offer so i thought i would buy it to give it a try!

Thanks again for the comments! I really had no idea there wa sooo much variety and quality of product out there!

Painting Noob...... Can or Brush?

Vallejo's Model Air paints are designed with airbrushing in mind, so they are properly diluted and pigmented. You could definitely use it for sponge work, but it may appear watered down compared to the regular paint you use, in which case may not be desirable if you're going for sponged on rust effects. Some people prefer their paints very diluted as it doesn't cause paint to build up in blobs, bubble, etc. I try to go for a "milky" consistency when painting, as I feel it gives me the best control of the paint.
