Citadel Texture Paints

I got some texture paint yesterday and was wondering, since it is paint do i have to prime my base before using it? or can i just put it right on the base without priming?
Does the texture paint need to be put on it layers also? or is just one big blob of paint enough for a base? I'm just wondering if its like normal paint where a few thin layers are better then one thick layer.

Thank you

I put mine directly on the base.

I recommend using a lot of paint out of the pot at once, with an old brush (that's how I do it ), otherwise it might need several layers - not for the color, but for the 'rough' bits. Then again, I'm not a very good painter, so more layers might be better, I just don't think you're able to do 'thin' with texture paints!

Citadel Texture Paints

It depends on the texture. IDK about the GW paint range but clearly it will be rebadged acrylic texture media from a company like Liquitex or Daler & Rowney.

There are several textures available and the amount to use depends partly on the type of texture and partly on the effect you want to create.

For example if you use a gritty texture you might want to put on two layers to create the effect of a frozen lava field that has had several flows over it.

Personally I would prime the base first. The acrylic medium is essentially colourless paint and sticks like paint.

Acrylic texture medium from available from other companies is a far better "bang for your buck" than the GW texture paint. I personally use Vallejo Coarse Pumice most often, but I also have Liquitex Natural Sand which has a finer texture.

I have had no problems using either one of those on unprimed surfaces (plastic, slate, cork, etc.).

GW texture paint is an excellent thing, but it's far too expensive.

Really craft paint with sand and grit is hardly worse.
