Attack Bikes... er, um... Attack!

Haha!

Yeah, anyways...

I have a nice little Attack Bike Squad on my shelf now, free of charge. Maybe I should say thanks GW for making middle aged dudes quit?

And I'm wondering how best to use them, as use them I shall. I can justify using pretty much any unit on the table if it was free.

I've had some experience with bikes thanks to my first CSM army, god rest it's faithless soul, but I think Attack Bikes are different...

How do you guys use them and what are some good loadouts for them? Pretty much the same as the Landspeeder huh? Lol

I'm a forum junkie, so sue me!

Not sure if this helps but creently I am using a MM Attack Bike with the Dark Angels Codex. They have Outlfanking and can come in from board edges to pop tanks. Also I purchase them with my Ravenwing Bikers as Troops so they score too. Aside from that I think you would just be better off using Land Speeders as they are more survivable and have a better chance of making it up field.

yeah, the Attack Bikes were just a nice bonus for me, so anything they do will be awesome. I had planned on painting them up as Support Company so they're really optional list filler...

I was thinking they would be great for stomping on xenos infantry...

Re:Attack Bikes... er, um... Attack!

it depends on your army.

DA: always give it a MM, and you get a cheap (should be scoring if you are doing a pure RW list) anti tank unit that can threaten almost any unit on the board with its scout move and fast speed.

SM: The best use is probably to give them a HB and put them into a squad of grav bikes. The reason is that the HB seriously boosts the range of potential of models that can be removed as casualties. Where normal gravgun squads could only remove models up to 24 inches, with an attack bike you could potentially cause more damage on that stringed out unit.

I would always give it a multi-melta. Certainly in the SM codex, most bike squads run meltaguns or gravguns, so the multi-melta gives more of the same, so works very well alongside those guns.

The heavy bolter is such a meh weapon in general, and not adding anything much to the squad means take the multi-melta.

Attack Bikes... er, um... Attack!

It’s worth noting that unlike speeders, attack bikes have chapter tactics. This means that not all of them are created equal, so keep that in mind. Imperial Fist HB bikes get bolter drill, which makes them more attractive as an option.

If you are running them as a unit (not attached to a regular bike squad) I’d just use them for fast melta delivery. Probably 2 to a squad.

At 40 points each in the last codex, I could see running 3xHB for 120 points. With the extra 5 points tacked on, and the reduction in price of other options, I’m just not feeling that anymore. A whirlwind can basically HB everything under a large barrage template for 65 points. I’d rather have a Dakka pred for 95 then a pair of HB attack bikes for 90. Chapter tactics can influence this, but that depends a lot of what you are playing.

Attack Bikes... er, um... Attack!

If you already have bikes, use the Attack Bike as a shield to absorb a wound for free (then drop it back once it has taken a wound).

The multimelta bike is generally more useful and effective against a wider range of targets. On average, they will do more wounds against MEQ and better, will do about the same wounds against T4 AP4 stuff, and allow you to engage vehicles effectively. If you're running plasma or grav guns on your bike, the MM attack bike is a no-brainer. HB is more effective against hordes, or course, but you maybe shouldn't be using bikes against hordes.

A single HB attack bike is actually a reasonably useful harassment unit. That 36" range means you can reposition your bike every turn to be just at the very edge of it's range, and be able to almost totally avoid any retaliatory small arms fire. Just be sure to stay out of LOS of big guns.

Attack Bikes... er, um... Attack!

So basically the Attack Bikes are going to fill the same role as a Landspeeder in almost every scenario? It's pretty much a trade for me between deepstriking near a locator beacon or having more mobility and FNP.

See this is why these guys, the new bikes and speeders, are getting painted in Support Company colours, hahaha!

Attack Bikes... er, um... Attack!

There is one critical difference. Attack bikes can contest and can charge into hth, landspeeders cannot.

Landspeeders provide more firepower for the points though. However, you can no longer turboboost a speeder onto an objective to contest. You still can with an attack bike.
