Now, he's a complete newbie (I am as well, for the most part, having only read the rules and lurking on forums for a long time), so he really only has an idea of what he'd like in an army, while I've been trying to learn what is good off of the internet. Both of us are very competitive, so we want to have semi-competitive lists to play against each other, and we don't really have issues if something is considered cheese, for the most part.

Here's the army I'm going to be making. (although this is only to compare with what he should put in his army)

The only thing I may change is swap the Destroyers for two Annihilation Barges.


Anyways, he really likes the Crisis suit and Riptide models, so he is planning on getting the supplement to field suits as troops, but until I head out to our GW and purchase it, what would you guys recommend for a decent 1000 point army? (Side note: He has the codex)

Avoid Fireblades, Stealth Suits, and Vespid. They under perform.

My first Tau Codex list suggestion would be the following.

HQ:
Ethereal

Troops:
Firewarriors x8
Firewarriors x9
Firewarriors x8
Kroot x10 + Kroot Hound

Elites:
Riptide, Ion Accelerator, Fusion Blasters
Riptide, Heavy Burst Cannon, Smart Missile System

Heavy:
Broadside High-yield Missile Launcher, Smart Missile System, Drone controller + 2 Missile Drones
Broadside High-yield Missile Launcher, Smart Missile System, Drone controller + 2 Missile Drones
Broadside High-yield Missile Launcher, Smart Missile System, Drone controller + 2 Missile Drones
