Help with Tau starter army (1000 pts)

I need some help. I convinced my brother to start 40k, and I could use some help with making an army list for his Tau. Now, he's a complete newbie (I am as well, for the most part, having only read the rules and lurking on forums for a long time), so he really only has an idea of what he'd like in an army, while I've been trying to learn what is good off of the internet. Both of us are very competitive, so we want to have semi-competitive lists to play against each other, and we don't really have issues if something is considered cheese, for the most part.

Here's the army I'm going to be making. (although this is only to compare with what he should put in his army)

Spoiler:

Sweord wrote:

HQ

190 Destroyer Lord: Sempiternal Weave, Mindshackle Scarabs, Resurrection Orb

Troops

178 Necron Warriorsx6: Night Scythe

165 Necron Warriorsx5: Night Scythe

Fast Attack

195 Canoptek Wraithsx5: Whip coilsx2

180 Necron Destroyersx3: Heavy Destroyerx3

Heavy Support

90 Annihilation Barge

Total: 998

The only thing I may change is swap the Destroyers for two Annihilation Barges.

Anyways, he really likes the Crisis suit and Riptide models, so he is planning on getting the supplement to field suits as troops, but until I head out to our GW and purchase it, what would you guys recommend for a decent 1000 point army? (Side note: He has the codex)

Thanks for reading,

-Sweord

Help with Tau starter army (1000 pts)

Tell him to get three high-yield missile pod Broadsides, and a Riptide or two. Twenty four Firewarriors is always a good start as they can be fielded in two teams of 12 or three teams of 8. An Ethereal is a must, they make Firewarriors worth it. A box of Kroot won't hurt, but they need a hound to make them a good choice (hounds give them Acute Senses). Crisis suits are always fun, but sadly not as good of a choice as Riptides. If he plays Farsight instead he can make them Troops, but then you have to give Bonding Knives to anything that can take them. Hammerheads are pretty solid, but Riptides do the same thing, so take them or leave them. A lot of people like to take Pathfinders at this point value, but I think the points are better spent else wear at under 1000 points.

Avoid Fireblades, Stealth Suits, and Vespid. They under perform.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
My first Tau Codex list suggestion would be the following.

HQ:
Ethereal

Troops:
Firewarriors x8
Firewarriors x9
Firewarriors x8
Kroot x10 + Kroot Hound

Elites:
Riptide, Ion Accelerator, Fusion Blasters
Riptide, Heavy Burst Cannon, Smart Missile System

Heavy:
Broadside High-yield Missile Launcher, Smart Missile System, Drone controller + 2 Missile Drones
Broadside High-yield Missile Launcher, Smart Missile System, Drone controller + 2 Missile Drones
Broadside High-yield Missile Launcher, Smart Missile System, Drone controller + 2 Missile Drones

That list would be a hell of a force to deal with at 1000 points, just tell him to make sure all the Firewarriors stay within 12" of the Ethereal.
