Tyranid list to enthral back some fun. 1750pts

Feeling kinda bummed out on Nids at the moment. So unsure if i want to drop the money on new models or start something else. Been playing 6-9 months btw.
Walking up the board with a swarm just isn't that fun anymore, getting shot at for turns... Though it's nice being praised for a painted swarm army.

The models i don't have will be green.

Swarmlord + One Guard = 335pts

Flyrant- Hive Commander, Gunz = 250pts

Crone- 155pts

Zoanthrope= 50pts [he will hide majority of game]

20x Spike Rifle Gaunts= 80pts

20x Spike Rifle Gaunts= 80pts

20x Devourer Gaunts= 160pts

3x Carnifex, Devs x2 on two models, Stranglethorn + TL Deathspitter on one model= 440pts

Tyrannofex- Thorax, AG = 200pts

1750
pts

Deployment. Zoanthropes hides with 20 Gaunts. Objective sitting.
Carnifex with Stranglethorn out front so he dies first + gets range. Other 20 Gaunts spread around Swarmlord to prevent being bogged down/ assaulted/ challenged.

Turn 1. Swarmlord gives Carnifex support and hides as best as he can as they all move up.

Turn 2. Devourer Gaunts, Crone, Flyrant come in behind their lines.

Turn 3. Should be in range with shooting.

Turn 4. Swarmlord wrecking face.

Turn 5. GG. And hopefully i've not been tabled.

Thoughts? Opinions?

the Devourer wielding Gaunts would highly benefit from additionnal bodies, we now have options to arm our little guys the way we want, for only 40 pts more you get 50% more bodies.
I love the idea of flanking some devilgaunts and alway try to add 5-10 extra little 4pts gaunts to be up in front of the team to soak up some fire without losing too many 8pts gaunts. Plus since they are in front they might still be able to shoot and they are still doing Str4 shot.

another flyrant would do a lot better then the swarmlord, though I love the big guy, he is difficult to pull out, the +1 to reserve only do so much and he is expensive.
I find you have a very minimal airforce, and those can be dealt with by most adversary, adding even just one more FMC will make a big difference as to whether or not your opponent can handle it or not. you also get extra points to add some synapse in the mid field (more zoan probably)

not sure about the tyranofex, I feel the exocrine will pull his weight better in a list like this, he's cheaper and nice low ap shots,
true he isn't as tough but at least he will harm the opponent.

I kinda like the idea of walking some gaunts across the field.
have you considered Venomthropes?
walking them behind some MC could avoid them getting seen thus shot, and since you can pre-measure, any army that doesnt have lots of long range stuff are relatively easy to maneuver around to avoid them being in range of the gun for the first 2 turns.

Ztryder wrote:Swarmy needs more guard now without being able to get iron arm. My grounding test rolls are horrendous though.. 80% fail rate.

The T5 also gives that extra ease of killing from S4 weaponry. Unfortunately you're right on all accounts. I may just ditch the idea of the Crone and therefore the whole list because i don't think the list could work without it. Need to warrant that 2+ reserve.

fartherthanfar wrote:the Devourer wielding Gaunts would highly benefit from additionnal bodies, we now have options to arm our little guys the way we want, for only 40 pts more you get 50% more bodies.
I love the idea of flanking some devilgaunts and alway try to add 5-10 extra little 4pts gaunts to be up in front of the team to soak up some fire without losing too many 8pts gaunts. Plus since they are in front they might still be able to shoot and they are still doing Str4 shot.

I normally do that when running them up board. But i think if they're outflanking they're doomed anyway. Previously devilgaunts as a suicide unit even with 30 always made back their 300pts. So i'm not to fussed about keeping them alive. It'll also tie up the opponent as even the slightest chance of passing IB will result in some more S4 shots coming.

fartherthanfar wrote:
another flyrant would do a lot better then the swarmlord, though I love the big guy, he is difficult to pull out, the +1 to reserve only do so much and he is expensive.
I find you have a very minimal airforce, and those can be dealt with by most adversary, adding even just one more FMC will make a big difference as to whether or not your opponent can handle it or not. you also get extra points to add some synapse in the mid field (more zoan probably)

You're right for sure. But dual dakkaflyrant then becomes "that list". I'm tired of it, and i wanted something slightly different which wasn't overly "fluffy" or tournament style. i think running SL we're destined to suffer. The points sink with anymore than 1 guard gets crazy. I think he plays better as a denial unit rather than trying to all out get him across the board now, without Iron Arm. The PE upgrade on a BS4 Exocrine is sure to be helpful.

fartherthanfar wrote:
not sure about the tyranofex, I feel the exocrine will pull his weight better in a list like this, he's cheaper and nice low ap shots,
true he isn't as tough but at least he will harm the opponent.

I may just do that instead. 30pts saved against a fast Tfex.

fartherthanfar wrote:
I kinda like the idea of walking some gaunts across the field.
have you considered Venomthropes?
walking them behind some MC could avoid them getting seen thus shot, and since you can pre-measure, any army that doesnt have lots of long range stuff are relatively easy to maneuver around to avoid them being in range of the gun for the first 2 turns.

Venomthropes are expensive to buy, cash wise. The way i would play them i they give all models within 6" shrouded, not all units as some people play it. Even on ebay they're crazy right now. Might just do a conversion once i get everything else done with my new to buy models.

barnowl wrote:The fex brood is a nice mix.
I have to agree, I am finding the exocrine to be very effective thanks to 6 s7 ap2 or s7 ap2 pieplate that does not get hot.

The Stranglethorn goes up front to get range and die. Hopefully (not likely) when he's dead the Brain Leech Devourers will be in range. Deathspitter for 5pts was just spare.

Thanks for the help and ideas guys.

Tyranid list to enthral back some fun. 1750pts

The Crone and the Harpy are actually quite good, but like most things you gotta run them in pairs if you want to see them actually do something. Against many anti air guns they are actually tougher then the flyrants due to their extra wound while still being almost 100pts less, sure the Quadgun is very optimized to kill them but you can only have one normally and its still not nearly as nasty as people are saying on the internet. If you Dive a Bs4 Quadgun isn’t likely to deal more then 2 wounds per turn against a Harpy/Crone, which means that under regular luck a crone/harpy could take 2 turns worth of Quad gun and still be kicking. If you are failing 80% of your grounding test then that sad but very unlikely, your only suppose to fail 33%.

The goal with them is to saturate the board with FMC so that the opponent wont be able to deal with them all and leaving many of them the opportunity to do their thing since most army cant deal with more then one Flyer per turn if even that.

Take 1-2 Dakka Flyrant and 2-3 crone/Harpy and I garantee good results from them against almost all armies out there.

Saturation is the key. On our first game against a SM Mech list our Crone made it thru to the end, and took out a Whirlwind. Second game, against a HH Mechanicum list, they eventually brought down the two flyrants, 20-odd gargs, the Crone and the Harpie (which we were trying out)... still beat 'em 12-10 though.
