How do you build the colors for your army?

I was playing with someone a few weeks ago, and one of his squads clearly got MVP of the game. Afterwards, he said "this guy's getting some details tonight. he's earned it", to which I chuckled. I've always painted primarily (no mods, that wasn't my actual blood), so I tend to get things painted at least to TT quality or better before I play them. I'm wondering what you guys do?

Now that I'm playing on a regular basis, I kinda like the idea of priming & basecoating everything before playing it, then giving the better performing units more attention. It would be a way of keep track of which models have survived more encounters or killed their share of foes.

A novel take on the "painted/modeled battle honors" concept. Personally, at least, I wouldn't want to field an intentionally visually downgraded army (distinguished from an army that simply isn't finished, due to time constraints). Adding kill markings and/or appropriate bits as trophies along the way is more appealing to me, as it means starting with the best looking force I can muster. Were I playing regularly with new armies and strapped for P&M time, it might be a fun way to determine the order in which I finish things, though.

I play daemons of tzeentch, and units that perform exceptionally well during a game will get a small flame bit (from some skaven set) painted and added to their model. Sort of a medal of honor from Tzeentch himself.

My Lord of Change has a crown of fire bits, and one of the heralds has a little cape now.
