My question here, not knowing a lot about MMA bouts is why the ref didn't just end the fight if the guy was trying to quit?

http://www.thepostgame.com/blog/dish/201310/mma-fighter-quits-fight-climbs-over-cage

Apparently looking at other articles, the guy who quit had either lost or something had gone wrong with his mouthpiece and asked the ref to pause the fight so he could sort it.

The ref had apparently done this twice already and refused to, so the guy asked for a timeout (which doesn't exist in MMA?). Again, refused, so he left.

Reading speculation is fun too, apparently the guy he quit against was an eyegouger and the guy quit because the ref kept not calling it. OR the quitter kept spitting out his mouthpiece for rest time... fun!

Relapse wrote:
My question here, not knowing a lot about MMA bouts is why the ref didn't just end the fight if the guy was trying to quit?

http://www.thepostgame.com/blog/dish/201310/mma-fighter-quits-fight-climbs-over-cage

I remember when this happened. So many confusing things, but thats gonna happen in an amateur bout between two dudes that both have losing records.

The referee was probably just flabbergasted and confused at seeing the universal timeout gesture thats used in all sports that actually have timeouts and didn't know what to do.

Had this happened in any of the major sanctioned promotions of MMA, the ref probably would have had the fight called after taking the fighter aside and asking if he wanted to continue. Not to mention taking a point for intentionally dropping the mouthpiece to stop action on more than one occasion. Also, security should've kept the fighter in/near the cage until a doctor checked him out, so as to check for signs of injury and such.

All sorts of shady gak happens in amateur combat sports, but this was the strangest so far.
