Well I am already proficient in blender, enough to make a reasonably well done mini at 28 mm in under 6 hours. And are you actually looking at Industrial CAD or digital sculpting?

CAD in highschool. Wouldn't recommend it. Boring as all hell.
If he's into digital sculpting, in my limited experience, CAD is about the furthest thing from it.

Coming out of highschool, I wouldn't expect a hope in hell of getting an internship, paid or not (although I'm no fan of the idea of unpaid internships, or unpaid work in general). You'll need a year or two in a discipline relevant to your work first. Also, from my experience, a lot of summer internship programs are based around university break schedules, which are different from your high school schedule, so you're already going to be a month behind anyway.

Your best bet would just be to get a normal summer job. If you're strong, you could probably get decent work landscaping or something.
Alternatively, if you live in an upper-middle class or higher neighbourhood, you could do what I did prior to my first year, and go door to door doing people's lawns/gardening (I use the term 'gardening' loosely, pretty much just watering plants and making sure nothing dies).
