3rd Edition Flight stand substitute

I have some old tyranids that that are "in flight." Some are gargoyles, others are leaping gaunts. I would like to give them a more dynamic and sturdy "flight stand" than the clear GW one. Ive tried plastic rods mounted to the base, but it feels unconvincing and in the case of the gargoyles not sturdy enough. Anyone experimented successfully with different stands or ways to make the model appear airborne?

Max
