Interested in an Airbrush

Hey guys,

I know there are a lot of threads about this, and arguably I could just dig around inside of those threads trying to pick information about airbrushes and what's going to suit me. But instead, I figured I would just ask a question to get a relative answer as to what I'm looking for.

So I want an airbrush. I want an airbrush to prime my models and to also base, layer and highlight with smooth, effortless gradients. I know there is work involved, and it takes practice to learn the skill. But I better start if I want to get good.

I am in New Zealand so I'm going to have to buy it online. Realistically I want to keep it under $180 USD.

Any recomendations for a good airbrush + compressor as a unit for my target price?

Ordering a good setup online with only $180.00 USD to NZ might be a problem. I just ordered one last week to Canada from the States and it cost me $275 CAD. This was for a good compressor with a tank, and a good airbrush with adjustable mm settings.

Interested in an Airbrush

Well, I ordered this (http://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B009YO3P96/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) one for several reasons:

The gun is adjustable and is gravity-fed, and it is from a good company, of course.

The compressor is quality and comes with a tank. Tanks are important because this will keep the noise levels under control.

You get some paints to play around with. They're acrylic so they're okay with plastic and such.

The brush cleaner is good, and the other supplies are useful. The shipping inflates the price of this significantly, it's a heavy package!

If you search for other models from there, just make sure the compressor has a tank, and the brush is from a good manufacturer (also from what I've read, gravity-fed guns are considered the superior design). Decide what you want out of the nozzle sizes (millimeters) and you should be okay!

Interested in an Airbrush

I would recommend getting a good basic tanked aircompressor and a cheap airbrush to start with. Practice with this airbrush - a good proportion of people destroy their first airbrush, so it's a good way to learn and only lose $10 rather than $100. After you're comfortable with this, get yourself a good Badger or Iwata. I love my Badger Krome, and the learning how to take care of my cheapie has kept it in tip top shape, with my cheapie now being used for varnishing which I want to keep away from my good one.

Off hand, this starter set looks like decent value. It's the same compressor I use - which is a great little tanked compressor with minimal noise, moisture trap etc - and comes with hose, airbrush etc. You coudl probably find better deals if you look further. Not sure if you'd be best getting something in NZ or importing from Aus. I bought my compressor and each other part standaline. this compressor is the same I use, and seems a decent price. Note that it's barebones, so you'll even need to order a hose (like I had to). I bought everything iirc from this seller who had decent prices including postage for Australia.

Interested in an Airbrush

I don't think you should buy that airbrush tbh. 1. it's really expensive and people really do break their first airbrush frequently. You'd be better off breaking a cheap $10 chinese one as your learning airbrush, then buying a good one. I also imagine that NZ suffers the same fate as Australia in that locally bought things often suffer a huge price increase. I got my Badger Krome from the US for $90, it retails for $170 at Combat Company here in Aus, which is usually decent price wise.

Is this the airbrush you mentioned? "NEW NEO FOR IWATA HP-CN GRAVITY FEED DUAL-ACTION AIRBRUSH - 5 YEAR WARRANTY". It's $80 on ebay.

Can you link us to the items you're talking about?

No need to rush into the purchase so take your time and get all the information you can, there are a lot of options open to us thanks to the internet so we don't have to put up with local shenanigans. Happy to keep throwing up ideas in this thread or PMs.

Combined with compressor it's not a terrible price. I prefer the control of buying each individual piece myself, but if you can nab a good package bargain by all means go for it - if it's got a good set of items.

On ebay, enabling searching world wide, and sorting by price + postage opens a lot of good options for us. Can usually get $10 with free shipping chinese airbrushes for example.

I can have it on late at night and the sounds doesn't travel far.
