I was wondering, what would i need to build the panels? Would it just be as easy as going to home depot buying some wood, and then just add some sand? or is there more to it? any help

Most people go modular because they want to be able to rearrange permanently modeled terrain elements like hills, rivers, etc. Some people also do modular city boards, but that can generally also be handled by simply basing the buildings and moving them around the solid table.

If you plan to model natural features, go to Home Depot and pick up some extruded polystyrene foam insulation boards, along with your plywood/MDF base. Cut these to fit your tiles and epoxy them to the bottom. This actually does a few things or you. It adds durability. Even using 2" thick foam my first modular board lasted about a year. The strength this provides is invaluable! It adds a lil bit of weight, but at the same time it feels good(ie:solid) in your hands. The weight also helps them from being accidentally bumped out of alignment while playing. Don't forget too that you can seal the MDF and paint it up too.
