Can I get some opinions on additives?

I'm talking about the various liquids and such we could add to our paints:

Mediums
Slow-Dri
Flow-Aid
Thinner
Water

Spoiler:

Right now I use water or Vallejo Airbrush thinner. I've been reading and noticing that in order to get my paints nice and thin a few things happen with these addatives:
1) The grip the pigments have to the model when applying via brush becomes terrible. This is true even in a 1:1 mix. If the surface has any sort of gloss to it the paint just wont stick.
2) When the paint dries and cures (24-48 hours) the latice binds into is very weak and will rub off something terrible and thus i have to varnish often.

I've been reading that the 1:1 mix of water to paint is actually more than what is recommended. More than 25% dillution of the paint will affect the binding agent or something like that...

Next, when doing detail work with difficult paints (whites/yellows) loading of the brush is super difficult with water/aribrush thinner. I find that if I don't have enough loading then the paint dries on the brush and thus leaves stroke marks. Trying to avoid this I will load a bit more heavily but regardless of how well i try to get the right amount it results in a pool immediatly on contact with the mini.

I was hopping to enhance the quality of my painting (fine detail work, airbrushing, thinning, blending) by utilizing the addatives...only I don't know what I need or how to use it (asside form some of the video's I've watched).

Could you possibly give me some pointers on how YOU have used them and how they improved your painting Kung-Fu!?

Can I get some opinions on addatives?

I love Glaze medium with inks.

Matte medium, dry retarder and flow improver are all key ingredients in my little bottle of paint thinning fluid I use rather than straight water for, well, thinning paint

I only use thinner when airbrushing.

Oh, and its additives.

Dakka has a great guide on acrylic mediums that will give you a good basic idea of how things work. It is good to have the selection of matte medium, flow aid, drying retarder, thinners and distilled water. As Azreal said, I only use thinenrs for airbrushing. When brushing, I use water. Depending on the effect I want and the paint in question, additives and quantity of thinning varies greatly.

The best advice would be to get them all, read the article I linked, and practice using them on some test minis that you can strip and repaint many times. I use AoBR marines for this purpose, they have bathed in nurgles rot many times, only to be born anew in Tzeenthchs fires of change.
