Ultimate Database of Fluffy CSM Lists! (In progress)

Hello Dakka Dakka! I feel that the tactics of the CSM codex have been well explored, and today many of the Dakka Dakka posts are on how to make fluffy CSM armies. I’ve spent countless hours reading so that you don’t have to! I will cover each traitor legions overall characteristics to guide you in making a home-brew fluff list and provide examples of forces if you want to recreate a force that really existed in official lore. Most of models you need to make the mentioned apocalypse lists you can find in the forgeworld website. If you want to know more about a named character or chapter or warband just google them! My findings!

Key:
1)	Alpha Legion
2)	Black Legion
3)	Death Guard
4)	Emperor’s Children
5)	Iron Warriors
6)	Night Lords
7)	Thousand Sons
8)	Word Bearers
9)	World Eaters

ALPHA LEGION:

Overview

The Alpha Legion will rarely fight battles without xenos, traitor legion, or cultist allies. They will sometimes fight with daemon allies, but only in small numbers if at all, and only if cultists and maybe and dark apostles are there to summon them. The strength of an AL warband is that it has a great variety of squads that are equipped to engage any enemy unit with several different strategies. An AL warband might have AL troops, daemon engines, daemons, orks, word bearers, cultists, and traitor guard all together.
The point here is that you can do pretty much anything you want, as long as you have allies of some sort, and if you have daemons, you only take a small detachment (maybe 200 points in a 2000 point game). If the AL was to ally with another traitor legion, they would probably choose the Black Legion as Alpharius and Horus were very close, and most of the other Primarchs shunned Alpharius for his unorthodox tactics.

Example forces based on official lore

-The Destruction of the Crimson Consuls: Alpha Legion, Black Legion, Crimson Consul traitors

-The Destruction of the Emperor's Swords: Emperor’s Sword traitors, Alpha Legion (Includes Pyskers), Gangsters and Cultists

-The Assault on Zoran: Alpha Legion elite force of chosen and terminators, cultists, led by Alpha Legion Daemon Prince “Strikemaster” Kernax Voldorius

-The Crusade of Fire at Junkatta: A soul grinder, the changeling, as well as the World Eaters Chapter Gladiator Group 138 led by one of their Chaos Lords

-The Crusade of Fire at Corvus Majoris: Forgefiends owned by an Alpha Legion Chaos Lord and his army of chosen

-The Crusade of Fire at Sovven: Alpha Legion Warband led by a Chaos Lord who called himself Alpharius (OR WAS IT REALLY THE PRIMARCH? MUHAHAA). His warband was composed of cultists, Chaos Marines equipped with anti-tank weapons, a single Helbrute, and a few Forgefiends (2 or 3)

-The Siege of Vraks (early stages): Traitor Guard and Alpha Legion led by Chaos Lord Arkos and several sorcerers

-The Siege of Vraks (middle stages): Arkos and his warband as described above allied with the World Eaters Skulltakers Chapter, led by Lord Zhufor.

-Battle of Tartarus: Alpha Legion Sorcerer Daemon Prince Sindri and Lord Bale leading an Alpha Legion warband

-The Achilus Crusade: Alpha Legion, Death Guard, Word Bearers, Beserkers of Skallathrax, The Pyre, The Stigmartus, Tau, The Blood Trinity, Traitor Guard, Mutants and Spawn, and mixed Legions of Daemons.

-The Siege of Vraks (late stages): Khorne Berzekrers in Dreadclaws, An'ggrath the Unbound, The Sanctified, warbands of Death Guard, World Eaters, Iron Warriors, Black Legion, Cultists, Mutants and Spawn, Beastmen, Warhound and Reaver Titans, all led by the Chaos Lord Arkos and his force described above

-Orpheus Revolt: Alpha Legion, mixed Daemon Legoins, Night Lords, Death Mongers led by warpsmiths, and Traitor Guard

-The Shadowed Ones: Chaos Lord Dynat Crowbane Mal and his warband of Traitor Guard and Alpha Legion marines

-Warband of Firaeveus Carron: Daemon Prince of Khorne Firaeveus Carron (take gift of mutation), and his warband of Alpha Legion

BLACK LEGION:

Overview

The Black Legion specializes in flexibility and the ability to eliminate enemy command units. The key to creating a fluffy black legion list is to have either a large host of squads, each equipped for different scenarios, or a few that are exceptionally versatile, and to accompany this force with scalpel squad(s) that can deal precise amounts of high damage to units that your opponent relies on, such as a screamer star, or riptides.
Horus had very good relationships with all of the primarchs, even the ones that were socially shunned such as Mortarion and Alpharius, so from that perspective the Black Legion has a deep history of allied engagements with everyone. Take heed though that the Black Legion had a series of wars with the Emperors Children over slaves and the mutilation, desecration, and cloning of Horus's corpse by Fabius Bile and the Emperor's Children. So I'd say avoid allying them together, and certainly do not take Fabius Bile if you do ally them. During his many Black Crusades, Abaddon allied with daemons of khorne frequently.
Any list including Abaddon may include the Daemon Prince Xyn'Goran or Terminator Lord of Khorne Araghast(dual lightning claws)
Any list not including Khornite forces may include Helbrute Amurael the Corrupted
Any list may take Raptor Lord Eralak and a squad of Raptors

Example forces based on official lore

-3rd Black Crusade: Abaddon and some Black Legion with allied Daemon Prince of Khorne Tallomin and his Daemons of Khorne

-5th Black Crusade: Daemon Prince of Khorne Doombreed and his legion of Khorne, backed by Abaddon and his Black Legion. You could use Ann'grath's rules for Doombreed, as Doombreed is stronger than any of the Daemon Primarchs

-7th Black Crusade: Abaddon, Sorcerer Iskandar Khayon, and Lord Telemachon Lyras leading Black Legion, allied with a leaderless horde of khornate berzerkers

-8th Black Crusade: Abaddon and a small elite force of Black Legion, lots of mutants, and allied Tzeentch Daemons

-9th Black Crusade, The Antecanis Massacre: Abaddon and Terminator Bodyguards and Black Legion leading World Eaters, Word Bearers, The Purge, Apostles of MinthRas, and the Daemon Prince Dhar'leth

-10th Black Crusade: Abaddon and Black Legion allied with Iron Warriors equipped for siege warfare

-12th Black Crusade: Abaddon and Vastakel Khyre in Terminator armor leading a horde of 50 terminators of the Black Legion (have to make it 30 ofc unless you're using double FoC)

-13th Black Crusade: Abaddon and Black Legion allied with World Eaters Chaos Lord Kossolax the Foresworn and his World Eaters Warband or Berzerkers and a BloodThirster that they summoned by killing their own cultists

-13th Black Crusade Siege of Medusa: Haradni 13th Armored Traitor Guard (mostly Leman Russ Battle Tanks and a few BaneBlades) allied with a Black Legion force led by Abaddon

-Pandorax Campaign: Abaddon and an un-named pysker of immense power leading Black Legion (Give the pysker all sorts of black legion artifacts)

-Hounds of Abaddon: Khorne Worshiping Black Legion warband led by Lord Urkrathos

-Bringers of Decay: Nurgle Worshiping Black Legion warband led by Lord Skyrak Slaughterborn

-Children of Torment: A Slaanesh worshipping warband led by the Tyrant of Sarora, Devram Korda, and Zagthean the Broken

-The Corpsemakers- Led by Daemon Prince Kor Megron, make use of Hell Blades and Hell Talons (forge world models)

-The Tormented: A warband of Possessed Black Legion Marines

-Sons of the Cyclops: Sorcerers of Ygethmor and Zaraphiston leading a combination of Rubic Marines and Tzeentch Marked Chaos Space Marines

DEATH GUARD:

Overview

Everyone's favorite legion these days! I'll try to do my best with this one. The key to making a fluffy Death Guard force is to show their culture of arrogance and contempt for weakness, as well as their love for Papa Nurgle's Gifts. Take lots of durable units that have the speed or range to boldly flaunt themselves, as well as fear-inducing special rules from icons and telepathy spells. Maybe make your own fear-based Daemon Prince using Be'Lakor's rules.
Mortarion wasn't a popular lad, and only became friends with Night Haunter and Horus. Everyone else thought he smelled I guess. If you're going to take allies here and make your own fluffy list, take Night Lords, Black Legion, or Nurgle Daemons.

Example forces based on official lore

-The destruction of Hydra Minoris: Typhus and Elite Death Guard force and hordes of zombies

-Achilus Crusade: "Blight Master" Ussax, a very powerful sorcerer leading a warband of Plague Marines

-The Purge: Blight Drones and Nurgle Sorcerers and a warband of Plauge Marines

-Apostles of Contagion: Sorcerer Lord Necrosius "The Undying" and his warband of Plague Marines

-Empyrion's Blight: Nurgle Lord Gideous Krall, his warband of Plague Marines, use of heavy armor suspected but not explicitly described

-"Perturabo's Plague": Nurgle Warpsmiths, Nurgle Cultists, lots of Daemon Engines

-The Tainted: Chaos Spawn, Plague Ogryns and other mutated creatures known as the "Rotted Circus". The most infamous of their creatures is a massive plague-spawn called Jibberjaw. Force is led by Daemon Prince of Nurgle Mamon and his warband of Plague Marines. (Forge World has many of the models you need to make this list)

-"The Green Death": Mortarion, DeathShroud, Elite Death Guard Terminators and Space Marines and hordes of nurglings and orks

-The Sacking of the Monastery of Madrigales: Daemon Prince Ignatius Grulgor, leading his Plague Marines and the Land Raider named Cradle of Desolation

EMPEROR'S CHILDREN:

Overview

Taking pleasure in the pain of their enemies and using sonic based weapons to demoralize their opponents, the Emperor's Children are both beautiful and terrifying to behold. Take lots of sonic weapons and make a point in displaying your strength to scare your opponent.
Fulgrim was closest to guess who-Horus. He was also very close to Ferrus Manus, but his legion is loyalist so you cannot ally with the Iron Hands. Certainly do not ally with Khorne forces. Looks like Slaanesh Daemons and Black Legion are your only options here. Unfortunately details regarding Emperor's Children forces are very rare outside of the Horus Heresy Books. Help here would be appreciated!

Example forces based on official lore

-The Gaudinian Heresy: "The Sapphire King" Slaanesh Lord, His bodyguard(Take your pick between Chosen or Terminators), Some Noise Marines, and hordes of Slaanesh Daemons and Spawn

-The Enslaving of Shardenus: Daemon Prince of Slaanesh Julius Kaesoron, Noise Marines, Slaanesh Cultists, Slaanesh Daemons

-Purging of Belial IV: Daemon Prince of Slaanesh Shaha Gaathon and Slaanesh Champion Zarghan Ironfist and their army of mutants and abhumans (cultists and spawn maybe?)

IRON WARRIORS: (COMING SOON)
