I am NO expert.... My older sony digital camera has a "macro" unction. If you have that make sure it is ON. also good lighting and its better if it is not direct light, like light reflected off a white surface back onto the model, it will stop those, white glare like "hot spots" but the macro function was the biggest improvement I found to my pics

Adjusting white balance is pretty key too. Dakka's gallery has a built-in feature that does that, but the results are a little too drastic for my tastes. I use Photoshop to adjust that, but Picasa and GIMP and a number of similar free photo editing programs have similar features.

Re:Photo tricks and tips

If you are able to use a remote to control the shutter, use one, even when the camera is on a tripod. If you can't use a remote, use the camera's built-in timer.

Build of buy yourself a tabletop photography lightbox. It is one of the easiest ways to get good results. If you would like to make one yourself, there is an article here on Dakka that covers it.

If you don't have Photoshop, you can download a free photo editor from the internet. The bellwether of free editors is GIMP; it's free, powerful, and easy to use. Here is a pretty good video on using it to edit photos of miniatures:

Hopefully all this will be of some help to you. Good luck!

I used to shoot everything with a solid black background before I switched to the "cloudy" background that you see lots of. I use these specifically: http://corvusminiatures.blogspot.com/2010/04/cloud-backdrops-for-your-miniature.html
