Rust effect, am i doing it right?

so, stumbled upon the "Ryza Rust" stuff from GW, and gave it a try. never before did rust effects, as my armies (IG and Space Marines) never really needed any.

but this year, i am mostly moving to terrain, and there is some metal involved, and hence i have to do some rust effect. it is basic, because i kinda suck at painting, but gave it a go, here are the results of the first try:

its not a pro thing, i am just looking for comments whether this looks okay for painting terrain, or where and how i could improve

is the goal to be abandoned or still in use? If abandoned is the goal I believe you are getting there but if it is still in use I highly doubt the Commissar would let a gun get into this sort of shape.

I would add dirt scattered about inside the platform, maybe xeno/imperium bits as well. I personally would be happy at this point for a basic display piece but the gun is crazy corroded when compared to the concrete base sides in comparison.

Re:Rust effect, am i doing it right?

well, it is supposed to be abandoned, and i tried to make it look so heavily corroded that noone EVER asks me again in a game where this is used as terrain if he can fire it (tired of having to tell them "no, its abandoned and no longer usable")

scattering some more bitz is a thing i haven't thought of (as this piece is secondhand, got it when my FLGS closed down), now that you mention it, that would make sense yeah

considering what you said about the concrete sides not being corroded enough, thats a good point, and i agree, looking at it.... do you have any tips how i could achieve a more coherent look?

For the concrete try adding some lighter grey areas to represent salts leaching out of the concrete. You could also add some trails of rusty water staining the sides and running down toward puddles at the base. If the emplacement has been abandoned for a while the other thing you would expect would be quite a lot of foliage. Maybe add some lichen or small bushes pushing up throguh between plates and anchored in odd corners? You could even add some drifts of static grass along the plate edgeswhere grass is pushing back up from below. Maybe google for pictures of abandoned buildings for some more ideas? You could also maybe add some bones, either of the original crew or of some animals that have been nesting around the thing.

Great start!
Remember that the brightest orange develops where water collects & runs - look at manhole / services cover in the street. Also look at images of wrecked vehicles & pictures in military modelling magazines for inspiration & more advanced techniques.
Try wrecking the wall a bit on your next piece then insert clipped lengths of paper clips into the ruined bits to simulate re-bar.
A bit like this:

Not the best angle but I hope you get the idea. Note: don't do them too long as you will end up cutting your fingers when painting & placing minis next to it!!
