First Time Painted Space Marine, Tips and Ideas Appreciated

First, Welcome to Dakka.

I’m no expert photographer, but besides being sideways, the light is very harsh. It makes it hard to judge subtle details. You might want to try indirect light, a light box, diffuser, or something.

I do like what I can make out though. Good depth on the chest eagle and texture on the purity seals. The gold detailing on the shoulder looks like it could be hit with whatever you did on the chest. Your blues look reasonably smooth, but there is some texture there. <Insert obligatory dakka “thin your paints” here>

Overall a solid, well done mini. If you can bang out an army to this standard, it will be a sight to behold on the battlefield.

Thank you! And yes with more recent models I have thinned the pain and it's starting to look smooth.. And sorry about the pic quality that apparently happens when you take pictures with your iPhone and it rotates them too

I know when I take pictures with my iPad I need to hold it at a certain rotation to get the pictures upright, no mater what it looks like on the screen. Not sure if the phones are the same.

I’ve seen much worse cases of paint thickness. I mostly mentioned it to beat the rush. I suspect “thin your paints” is the most commonly given painting advice here. “Drill your gun barrels” I think is number 2. Although now that I think about it, #2 is probably something about mould lines.

Looks good nice deep dark blue, your golds look great nevelon has gotten on me too so listen to him about the shoulder. Overall a very good space marine. Eventually I would add some highlights and to reiterate thinning your paints to get that nice even smoothness. and better pics would help out too!

Looking good. Much better pictures, you can see a lot more detail. Good metallics, good depths. Some highlights might help, but what you have there is fine if you don’t want to bother.

If you want to add another step, there are tricks to lenses for eyes. Shading on one side a a pip of white on the other. Same sort of thing Eldar do for gems. Might be worth looking up some tutorials if you feel like it.

Keep up the good work!

Add the smallest bit of white to your blue and do a highlight, otherwise these are really nice for starters. Clean, kempt, good coverage, balanced color scheme. Very nice!
