Samurai Paints

Okay, so I am going to start work really soon on an army of IG samurai using all 3rd party miniatures, now I know that a lot of the purists are gonna be against me from the start, but in my opinion those purists should keep their trap shut and complain about it somewhere else.
I digress, the main problem I face now is this: What paints, and colors for that matter, should I use for this army?
I mean, originally I was gonna paint them rather uniquely with oily steel and pure red from vellejo, but the more I think about it the less I like the color scheme. So I turn to you, fellow dakka(ers?) for advise, and any advise short of using pure GW models will be greatly appreciated.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Also intend to buy myself a couple of Leman russ battle tanks so that I can field SOMETHING at GW approved venues, but I know exactly what I am gonna do with those

First: Great idea! I always love to see non-conventional armies, so go for it.

Second: I am not sure this is the right way to go about getting ideas. You should probably do some research, i.e. start by looking at the existing samurai-style IG projects here in P&M (search function helps). Then, you should google samurai images. And scifi samurai. Look for anything you like, visually.
Look at sites like deviantArt, cgHub and 3Dtotal.

Think about the overall look: dirty and weather-beaten or shiny parade army? Coherent or patched up? Or different clans maybe? Standard weaponry or Japanese style?
Since you have the 3rd party stuff, I guess you have looked both at Wargames Factory and Puppet Wars.

As to colours: Everyone has his or her favorites. I prefer mostly Vallejo Model Color and PP (liquid pigments) range.
(I don't use an airbrush).

If you have never painted an army before, there are tons of excellent tutorials in "P&M tutorials" (now, who would have thought...;-) )

Samurai Paints

Well, this was not only me posting a question, I was gonna do a step by step of my first platoons paint jobs, as well as possibly posting a pic or two of them when they are finished
Then I was gonna do up the command squads, maybe a few rough riders, and all that. I was only inquiring into what paints you all suggest I use because I have only ever used paints I can get a michaels and wally-world like apple barrel and folkart, and was figuring that these might not be my best option

Definitely seconding the Vallejo range treslibras mentions, though I go more for Vallejo Model Air (VMA) for both airbrushing and brushing, and Vallejo Game Colour (VGC) for the vibrant sci-fi and fantasy colours. Both Vallejo Model Colour (VMC) and VMA are more muted, realistic colours often suited for camouflage, ww2, modern etc. paint schemes. I order them all online as that's the cheapest way to get them here in Aus. Will usually sneak in some bits other ranges too such as GW nuln oil, AP Inks etc.

You will find a lot of support for vallejo online as it's, I think, the most popular wargamer paint range, even more so than GW/Citadel. At least amonst those that post tutorials. till a lot of GW tutes though heheh. This support is really nice as it lets you match schemes easily.

There is also the Dakka Paint Compatibility Chart which is an essential tool.

Lastly I'll also second that you need to get an idea of what you want first. DO you want a historical style Japanese army or a vibrant sci-fi one?

This thread has some nice examples such as:

http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a191/kell553/Imperial%20Guard/3SGTSfront.jpg
http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a191/kell553/Imperial%20Guard/PltSqd3.jpg
http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a191/kell553/Samurai%20Knights/Tokugawa4-1.jpg
http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a191/kell553/Samurai%20Knights/PCS1.jpg
http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a191/kell553/Samurai%20Knights/Ogryns3.jpg
