Magnetic ball/socket joints for flyers or other uses

Has anyone found any good options at the right scale for doing this? I'd love to do this, but have never seen the right combination of size and price... So I'm looking further afield, but thought I'd check here first...!

Anyone?

Magnetic ball/socket joints for flyers or other uses

I have thought about it, but that size magnets get pretty expensive and hard to come by depending on the flyer (some are more heavy than others).

Maybe some of the large ring magnets, and a large steel ball bearing.

There are a few phone holders that use this, but they are pretty pricey.

Magnetic ball/socket joints for flyers or other uses

The way to do a ball/socket magnet joint is to attach a pin to the ball magnet, use a non-magnetic cylinder as the base, and stick a cylindrical magnet inside the base, so the ball is drawn to but doesn't touch the magnet inside the base.

Different materials give you different levels of friction - these guys http://www.magnet-solution.com/product/view/magnetic-ball-joints/# - make a good sized one for flyers at least - ball is 10mm diameter, so large-ball-bearing size. I'm waiting on price quotes from china for those, probably have to buy a ton of them, so hoping there might be others out there who want to jump in on the bulk deal

Re:Magnetic ball/socket joints for flyers or other uses

For my high elf Phoenix I took a alan wrench and a matching grub screw/set screw. I ground down the set screw until the allen wrench would pass through it. Then I glued a magnet to the back of the set screw. This allowed the allen wrench to slip into the set screw and the magnet would hold it in place. I used a Dremel cut off tool to cut off a small section of the allen key and glued it to the top of the clear rod that came with the model. I embedded the set screw/magnet into the body of the Phoenix. This allows me to separate the model from the stand so that it does not take up as much room in the foam tray. The magnet has just enough strength to allow the Phoenix to be picked up off the table with out the base falling off.

Dale
