First, don't use just water. Using an airbrush thinner/medium (either store bought or homemade) will net you much better results. Store bought thinners/medium include Vallejo Airbrush Thinner, Liquitex Airbrush Medium, Golden Airbrush Medium, etc. and this is how to make you own:




Second, there is no magic ratio that works every time for every color of every paint range. It all comes down to the consistency of the paint, the size of your needle, and your working pressure. Low pressure work (below 15psi) with a tiny needle (anything below .3mm) will need thinner paint than base coating terrain at with a big needle (.5mm or more) at a higher pressure (+30psi). It all takes trial and error to get it right and it can be frustrating but you'll get it down quick enough.
