Painting color white tips

Hi all,

I've been out of the hobby for a few years and been thinking about getting back into the painting side of things. When I was painting it was Ultramarines, Blood Angels and Necrons. I rarely had any opportunity to paint things in white, at least large amounts of white. Now I am envisioning painting some Tau fire warriors and crisis suits in a white color scheme, haven't decided on accents yet. If anyone saw the movie Oblivion (Tom Cruise) I was aiming for making the Tau esthetic look like the drones in the movie, essentially walking classic white ipods.

Long story short, I have very little experience with getting a nice crisp white painted up for entire models and was hoping for some tips. I've read in some places that you want to build up using grays until your last coats are white. Primer wise I've seen some say primer in black and the white pops better and seen some say primer in white and it makes your life a lot easier to paint the white on.

And finally what are the new GW paint names that I want to use for a project like this? I used to know their paint name scheme and how the colors worked for me but they have changed up their line and naming system so I'm at a bit of a loss. If there are other paints you recommend aside from GW I am happy to consider them. I stuck with GW because it was the only paint system I had experience with and knew what I was getting when I purchased Ultramarine blue or boltgun metal. If I have to relearn their system I might as well consider another one.

Thanks in advance for any advice or suggestions. For a frame of reference here are two images that inspire me:

and

In addition there are a lot of other paints in the line now.

Vallejo Game Color paints kept their version of the old naming convention.
