Wraith units ?

So i have 3 boxes of unopened wraithgaurd. I already have 5 wraithgaurd with D-scythe constructed and painted
So my thoughts are what do i build my other ones as. I wanna do 2 as regular wraithgaurd. But the 4th unit Im
considering doing wraithblades. But i really dont know who wraithblades stack up against other melee units
from different armies. And if not blades should i take a 3rd unit of standard guard or another unit of scythes. I dont
really have magnets and ive never magnetized before so i don't really wanna mess with that. Anyway id like to hear
your suggestions and reasons. Thanks for all the help

Honestly I'd be surprised if you needed more than 3 units of WG ever.

Wraithblades serve a purpose, but as we don't have an assault transport it's hard to take them in their 5 man form and make them work as either they just get shot up foot slogging or exit a transport, then get shot up as they await the designated round after they exit said transport. Typically the way to run them is with axes and shields, and then put a spirit seer with them and have them either rush towards and objective and camp there with their 3+/4++ or take them in a 10 man squad and march them across the field as a giant block of t6 3+/4++ feth you with a 1/3 chance of getting protect/jinx to make it a 2+/4++. A scary, if somewhat slow, unit.

Yeah, cannons or scythes in 5/6 man teams work well in serpents. 10 man cannons are decent footslogging. If you want blades, 10 with axes with a spiritseer is basically the only way to go.

I could see 4 units of wraith if you run Iyanden, but otherwise you will field 2/3 tops for most games.

Re:Wraith units ?

My two cents: get another standard guard unit or D-scythes.
The ranged firepower they put out, whilst short ranged, is terrifying when used against the correct targets.

Wraithblades on the other hand really don't offer that same kind of threat level. They are good at cc, being as tough as they are, and fearless. But they have a limited number of attacks, especially if using the axe.

Even then they face the issue of getting to cc in the first place, as others have said, the lack of assault transport really leaves no viable way of getting them into the fight.

Re:Wraith units ?

Aiming for protect/jinx is a pretty smart move as far as Wraithguards are concerned.

Protected Wraithguards are some of the hardiest infantry in the game. Only one in thirty six bolter shots will actually hurt.

If you can get fortune, that becomes one in two hundred and sixteen bolters.

If you can't get protect, conceal is also a good bet for standard wraithguard, as shrouded adds a good deal to their durability.

Wraithguards are essentially elite killers. Distort more or less ignores a target's toughness while the weapons ignore armor saves, and acts as a wannabe haywire weapon against vehicles (with the benefits of AP2 if you penetrate their armor). If you roll a six, that super special character or monstrous creature is no longer a problem, or that vehicle is now sporting a hole.

Axe wielding Wraithblades are effectively Space marine Hammernators by that exchange worse saves and slightly less strength for more toughness (and thus better resilience against small arms fire) and greatly superior psyker support. However, Hammernators get assault transports and deep striking (and concussive) and you don't. I'd skip on the sword wielding wraithblades as AP3 killing is really not something your army has any lack of, and not having an invulnerable save is a dangerous thing if you're chasing after elites. Sure you don't have much volume of attack, but the number of units that can win assault against a properly psyker supported Axe using wraithblade unit is rather small.

Thank you, thats very helpful!

So far my 1750 List looks like this

Spiritseer-Spear of teuthlas, Wraithforge stone, Helm of Xellethon

5 Wraith Gaurd -D Scythe
Wave Serpent- TL Scatterlaser, Shuriken Cannon, Holo Fields, Vectored Engines

5 Wraith Gaurd -Wraith Cannon
Wave Serpent- TL Scatterlaser, Shuriken Cannon, Holo Fields, Vectored Engines

5 Wraith Gaurd -D Wraith Cannon
Wave Serpent- TL Scatterlaser, Shuriken Cannon, Holo Fields, Vectored Engines

10 WraithBlades- Axe&Shield

Wraithlord - 2 Flamers, Ghostglaive, Starcannon

Wraithlord- 2 Shuriken Catapult, Ghostglaive, Brightlance

That comes out to exactly 1750, run the seer with the blades and footslog them around killing whatever they run into in CC, using the rest of my armies to shoot up everything. Not very complicated.

Not very complicated.

This is mostly drawing from how my wife handles her expansive Eldar collection and my experiences playing it on occasion/having it fight alongside me in team-games/fighting against it/using it as allies.

Seems good, at higher points values you may wish to have a warlock council or a wraithseer. And I think Iyanden gets to have multiple spiritseers in a single slot. Eldar psychic powers are just that useful to have.

Your main concern here would be fliers and hordes. So I'd recommend trying to camp that objective in a good spot of cover and let them come at you.

If you want to expand this army I'd suggest; Another wraithlord or Wraithknight, another HQ/multiple spirit seers, Wave Serpents (yes I know they'll lose you friends but they're the best way to ferry your wraiths around), and whatever you fancy in Fast Attacks or Elites. Perhaps beef up your troop squads/add more squads.

Fire dragons overlap a bit too much with Cannon Guards in preferred targets so I'd recommend skipping them. Banshees...are still one of the worst units in the game, sadly I think you should avoid them in spite of how lovely their models look and how iconic they are. Scorpions however, are much better and can help clear away the Hordes that would otherwise tarpit your wraiths, and their exarch getting to use an S8 power fist at initiative is awesome. With stealth and MEQ saves, they're also reasonably survivable. Some people swear by Harlequins, others dislike them. It's really your choice.

For fast attack, if you're really worried about fliers go for the Nightwing, otherwise Warp-spiders and Hornets will rarely go wrong for you.

Now the dual-FOC over 2k points means you'll nearly always have slots open and units/shiny bits to add in nearly any points limit before Apocalypse games become the norm so don't stress out too badly about what goes into what slot for bigger games.

If you're worried about Escalation, Revenant Titans are both thematic and very powerful.

If you desire allies, you have the choice of Dark Eldar, Corsairs, and Tau for BATTUL BROTHAS and all mesh well with your armies (though many feel that the Corsairs don't add too much you don't already have). The DEldar and Tau allow for some combos widely held to be annoying. The Tau can offer you powerful and accurate long range shooting from a quite mobile army, bar none the best anti-air in the game, and both your buffs and their buffs mesh and complement each other quite well. (Fortuned Riptides with guided Ioncannons, trolololol) The DEldar offer you extreme maneuverability, very interesting gear and combos, a metric ton of dakka (DEldar volume of fire remains some of the best) and can function quite well as the hammer to your anvil or a fan to blow away chaff so that your wraiths can focus on things your enemy values.

Also jinxing an enemy's precious squad of TEQs and introducing them to the DEldars many, many very nasty AP3 options is hilarious and you should totally try it.
