To achieve the dimensions you want, it's generally easier to cut down a kit of sufficient girth than build skinny parts out. Most biplanes also aren't terribly large aircraft - a 1/35 Sopwith Camel will still be reasonably small, while a 1/35 C-130 would be much larger than you want.
