Assembly before painting?

G'day all,

This isn't a "do you assemble before painting?" thread. I was wondering how you deal with models that you really won't be able to paint properly if you assemble first, but then when you do assemble them, they will be tricky and probably require greenstuff.

Specifically I'm talking about this dude:

The sword arm is all one piece from the shoulder down, the body is another piece. If I glue the sword on first, I won't be able to get my brush under it to properly paint the plasma pistol and also part of his coat/neck area. But I can see from test fitting that there'll also be a gap between the arm and body (at the back which you can't see in that image) which will require smoothing out with greenstuff.

How would you deal with such a model? Partially paint it and then assemble, greenstuff, reprime (maybe mask?) and then somehow blend the freshly painted coat with the previously painted coat?

Maybe just do the basecoat and shading first, assemble, greenstuff, touchup the basecoat and shading, then go back over and do the highlights?

It's a nice looking model, so I intend to spend some time doing some nice blending and maybe 4-6 layers worth of blending for the shade/basecoat/highlight.

I would go with your second idea, personally. That way when you do the final shades/highlights on the coat, everything color-wise will line up nicely.
